    Questions about edits for wikipage on the California Consumer Privacy Act

    Hello! I've started drafting some edits for my assigned article. There is a section on opinion polling prior to the election that successfully passed the CCPR (proposition 24) into law. It seems redundant at this point since there are official results available, but I am hesitant to delete an entire section. The talk page for the article is basically empty except for a user planning to update it once official vote totals were out. Do you have any guidance on how to proceed?     @Lillianbroschart, Hm. I think it's ok to remove the poll if you think it improves the quality of the article. Just be sure to explain in your edit summary why you are doing what are you are doing. If someone opposes that edit, then you can discuss it in the talk page.     WikiEdu assignment setup questions

    Hello Brianda,

    Although I've used WikiEdu previously, it's been some years. Here are a few things that have come up for me so far:

    1) how do I set deadlines for WikiEdu assignments? I'm not seeing anyway of doing so in the Dashboard Timeline under edit

    2: does WikiEdu actually track individual student edits and additions? I seem to recall it does but I wanted to double-check

    Elizabeth.uni, here's a tip that may make it easier for you. Your user page has a link to your dashboard, so if you know how to get back to your user page, just go there to find it. If you don't know how to get back to your user page, find the user avatar icon at the top of every page at Wikipedia (including this page!) and click it; it looks like one of these two images to the right. On a desktop, clicking the icon takes you straight to your user page. On mobile, you will get a dropdown; click your own user id to go back to your user page.     I see this article has just been assigned as an education project, which may not be a good idea given it's currently being reviewed and revised for Good Article status.     Thank you for reaching out about this and I completely agree. The thing is the students for this particular class are working on the French article for Gae Aulenti, not the English article.     Changing title of an existing Wikipedia entry

    Hi Brianda,

    I am currently working on updating and expanding the "Murder of Pregnant Women" Wikipedia page for my class. One of the edits I hope to make is changing the title to either "Pregnancy and Femicide" or "Pregnancy-Associated Femicide", and my professor recommended I contact you regarding this as this would be a significant edit. I was therefore wondering if you had any insight regarding whether or not making this edit would be possible?

    Hi User:Samdlb123, there is a process for "potentially controversial" page moves. I think using that process is probably a good idea. As described in the instructions, you would add some code like the following to Talk:Murder of pregnant women:
    {{subst:requested move|Pregnancy and Femicide|reason=I think the page should be named "Pregnancy and Femicide" rather than "Murder of Pregnant Women" because....}}

    Hello @MYeer, Since you are working in groups, the dashboard will assign one bibliography page and one sandbox draft page per group. It will assign those pages to the first student that signed up, which is probably why you are seeing the name of one of your peers instead of your own, but feel free to edit that page and contribute to it.     Hello @Longislanduni2025, If you check out this training module on the timeline, you'll see that the instructions are to work live on Wikipedia, without a sandbox. That is why you cannot find a sandbox to work on.

    Well the first crucial step is to develop your bibliography and outline of the changes you'll be making. If you check Week 4 on the timeline, you'll see the trainings module, Building your bibliography for this. Once you know what sources you'll be using and have a plan for your edits, then you can start editing the article you've chosen to work on.     @Longislanduni2025, As part of the course, you are instructed to edit directly the existing Regime article. I am not sure what page you are trying to move, but if you selected to improve an existing article then you need to edit that existing article. There are other students in your editing the same article. Again I suggest looking over the Working live training module for instructions on frequet, small edits to improve a page.     Hi Brianda. I believe one of the students in Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/University_of_Wyoming/Architectural_History_(Fall_2024) named TMaese probably needs some additional guidance when it comes to uploading and using images. They upload the same file under different names to Wikipedia and Commons, and the copyright license they're using is almost certainly wrong. In addition, the way they've added images to Lehman-Tunnell Mansion is also not really how it should be done.     Choosing an article

    Hello,

    I planned to create an article on Bronzeville, the name Little Tokyo was called during a period of time during Japanese and Japanese American incarceration during WWII, focusing on the city during that time period. However, there is already an article listing several possible meanings of "Bronzeville," and "Bronzeville, Los Angeles" automatically redirects to "Little Tokyo, Los Angeles," so now I'm wondering whether there is even justification for creating a new article at all.     Hey there @StripesAreCool, I recently learned about Bronzeville earlier this month. Very cool that you've motivated to write about it. You pose a good question about whether to create a new article. If you have 3+ sources profiling this specific period outside and it's own culture, history, etc., then it is possible to write a new article, you would just get rid of the redirect and add the content onto the article page.
    But you'd also be able to expand on the existing paragraphs on the Little Tokyo article, if that's what you want to do.

    (talk page watcher), hello, StripesAreCool. Thanks for considering this as a new topic to write an article about. The first thing to think about, is what the topic of your article is, and for starters, is it the term itself, like how the term Bronzeville was invented, who invented it, who used it, how it was used, and so on, or is it about "Bronzeville", the concept? I'm about 95% sure you are talking about the latter, as well you should, as articles about terms are rare and deservedly so.
    So, assuming you are writing an article about "Bronzeville", the concept, how would you define that topic? In particular, what is the overlap and separation (think Venn diagram) between the concepts of "Little Tokyo" and "Bronzeville"? Are they intersecting circles in your view (i.e. are there some things that are part of "Bronzeville" that are not part of "Little Tokyo"? Or, is "Bronzeville" a subset of the concept of "Bronzeville", so that it is a little 'B' circle sitting wholly inside the larger 'A' circle about "Little Tokyo"? If the latter, then most likely you might start out by creating a new section within Little Tokyo, Los Angeles called Bronzeville.
    If it is just a temporary name for something else, like "Liberty cabbage" (the word many Americans used instead of Sauerkraut during World War I) then it very likely doesn't deserve an article, as it won't have sufficient sourcing.
    But swinging back to the case of a term becoming an article, in another case of a renamed vegetable during a war, there was a movement in America to rename "French fries" as "Freedom fries" during a period of anti-French sentiment during the Iraq war which took hold and gained national attention, and many news reports. There was so much reporting about this term, that the term itself became WP:Notable, which means it crossed the boundary preventing most words from ever becoming an article, and now we have the article Freedom fries, all about the word itself, and its history, and not about the vegetable.
    So, you are faced with several questions: are you talking about a word Bronzeville itself that perhaps became notable as an alias (like freedom fries) or didn't (like liberty cabbage)? Are you talking about a neighborhood concept, more like Little Tokyo, but different from it somehow other than just a simple euphemistic synonym to avoid negative connotations of the main word? Once you answer those questions, you will have a better idea how to proceed. In the meantime, if you haven't read Help:Your first article, that may answer some of your questions. Edits by SageSelios (talk · contribs), AshleyHarden13 (talk · contribs), Jordan.Gr5 (talk · contribs), and others. I completely assume good faith here, but their edits were in part WP:SYNTHy, unsourced and/or original research and used an essay-like tone.     UGST112 - Women in Science and Math Fall 2024 (Fall 2024)

    Hi Brianda. One of the students in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Oregon/UGST112 - Women in Science and Math Fall 2024 (Fall 2024) named Orinshriver recently uploaded File:Sibrina Collins Portrait.jpg and File:Young Sibrina Collins Working in Lab.jpg without providing any real source or copyright information, and the files have been tagged for speedy deletion per WP:F4 as a result. The files are attributed to a "Noah Stephens Photography" and "Wayne University" respectively, which most likely means they're not going to be able to kept per WP:F11 without verification of copyright holder WP:CONSENT since neither of these appear to satisfy WP:NFCC for conversion to non-free use. I'm sure the student meant well, but perhaps you could ask them to review whatever modules/materials Wiki Ed provides related to uploading images other media before uploading any more files. Mistakes like this are quite common and OK, but repeating them over and over again could lead to an administrator stepping in and issuing a more formal warning. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:22, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Texas Christian University/Video Game History (Fall 2024)

    Hi again Brianda. Two students in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Texas Christian University/Video Game History (Fall 2024) named Cp143 and Sooner8112 respectively uploaded File:Screenshot 2024-12-03 at 1.35.05 PM.png and File:Screenshot 2024-11-21 at 12.49.51 PM.png under a {{Non-free software screenshot}} license, but neither student provided a non-free use rationale and neither file is being used in any articles. Maybe you could get in touch with these students and explain to them why the files they uploaded have been tagged for speedy deletion. There's also an issue with the file names chosen by the students per WP:FNC#2, but this can be sorted out after the above-mentioned non-free content related issues are resolved.     Hi Brianda, I am instructor trying to reach one of my student editors, Scr124, to ask them to upload their talk or sandbox onto wikipedia. Another student and I wanted to add a subheading in which we summarized some of the themes the memoir addresses and cite scholarship on the memoir. It is on scr124's sandbox but this needs to get added to the Jaquira Díaz page. How to do that? How to ask scr124 to upload it?     Instruct students to copy the source when copying to or from sandboxes

    It happens too often that a student introduces an edit that strips formatting templates such as {{langx}} and {{IPA}} (example), presumably as a result of copying paragraphs on the HTML output (action=view) and pasting them onto VisualEditor. This not only inconveniences those of us who patrol, but also makes the edit less likely to survive since it makes reviewing the edit and identifying potentially admissible parts much more difficult. Copying using VisualEditor is slightly better, but it still breaks some templates and references, making copying the source the only way to get clean diffs. Can you please make sure your students are properly instructed to copy the source when copying between the main namespace and their sandboxes? Thank you.
