Hello, I'm CFA. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Jennifer Crocker seemed less than neutral to me, so I removed it for now. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. C F A 22:52, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm really sorry that I've not done this correctly. Dr. Crocker and I (a former student) are trying to update this page so that it better reflects her contributions to the scientific community. The original page was clearly written by someone who doesn't have a nuanced understanding of her work. How can we update this in a way that is more accurate but also adheres to this site's standards? Hello Amycanevello. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Jennifer Crocker, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being employed (or being compensated in any way) by a person, group, company or organization to promote their interests. Paid advocacy on Wikipedia must be disclosed even if you have not specifically been asked to edit Wikipedia. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Amycanevello. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Amycanevello|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. C F A 22:53, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I do not receive any type of financial benefit for this. I am one of Dr. Crocker's former students. She has asked me to update this page so that it better reflects her research and contributions to the scientific community. The original page was clearly written by someone who doesn't have a nuanced understanding her career. How can we update this in a way that is more accurate but also adheres to this site's standards? Amycanevello (talk) 16:51, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to Jennifer Crocker. While objective prose about beliefs, organisations, people, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. C F A 16:47, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

Also, I'm not sure why this is getting flagged as soapboxing, advertising or promotion - can you help me figure out what she and I are doing wrong here (Dr. Crocker wrote the entry - I'm just helping her post it).
