About Moritheil

Editing

I learned editing on the Wikia projects before actually creating an account on Wikipedia. I am interested in a broad variety of subjects. I tend to correct minor errors where I see them.

I drastically revise pages marked for deletion, which may trigger "blanking" warnings: please look at them carefully. In almost all cases the deletion request has cited excessive non-relevant material, and this is the reason for my cutting the article length down. I want Wikipedia to have all the information it can hold, but frankly, I'd rather have fewer details than no article at all.

If I have asked you to clarify something, please don't take it personally. All I want is some answers. That's why we're all here.

Welcoming policy

I occasionally welcome new users who have only made a few edits or who have created an account the same day. I do this because I believe they will benefit from the links I suggest to them and from knowing that someone else supports their efforts and encourages them to stay. I will not welcome someone who has already been welcomed, as that is spam.

I do make an effort to follow up with these users and explain things; User_talk:Dalmationsforlife is one example.

Pop culture references in math and science

  • I am a strong supporter of math and science education, and I believe that Wikipedia is a great place to learn.
  • As most Wikipedians have noticed, browsing often takes one to tangentially related pages.

Consequently, I am in favor of pop culture reference sections on math and science pages, as they increase the likelihood that a random viewer will be drawn to the math or science page, and wind up learning.

The Liar Starscream story

So, I do make mistakes. But as a habit from my research days, I often double-check my work and correct myself as soon as I realize it.

Here's an example: two IP addressed users were edit warring, so I went in and took a look at what was going on. One of them kept editing a name from "Ramjet" to "Liar Starscream." Now I knew that "Ramjet" and "Starscream" were characters but I figured "Liar" was an additional epithet. So I reversed the edits by that user and warned him. Then I decided to search the internet and make sure that was right. Lo and behold, all these fan sites turned up "Liar Starscream" with explanations: it was a cloned version of Starscream that was a pathological liar. Whoops! I immediately reverted my undo [2], changed my message to the user I reverted to an apology, and added a section on the talk page clarifying the situation.

We are none of us perfect. We have to recognize that and admit it, or we shall be even more flawed.

Vandalize a page that only editors read to promote a message to the public

  • I think I'm glad bad puns are not cause for discounting opinions in deletion discussions —Quasirandom (talk) 01:20, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Read, or don't vote

I believe that this AfD was flawed throughout its entire founding and execution on a fundamental level. A deletion discussion cannot be concluded without a valid debate. A debate cannot be conducted without valid arguments. Arguments cannot be given without valid evidence. Evidence cannot be gathered without reading the articles under discussion. --tjstrf talk 17:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikiwriting

Robert E. Cummings, an assistant professor of English and director of the First-Year Composition Program at Columbus State University, praises Wikipedia as "a more authentic, immediate audience for student writing" in a column in Inside Higher Ed. 16 March 2009

Bridge Nuking

"Invalid", "biased", "pathetic", "problematic" and various other negative adjectives. A general attitude of "I am right and your opinion doesn't count". Bridges have not so much been burned as nuked from orbit. Oldelpaso (talk) 15:47, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

PEBCAK

Is it the bot that fails gracelessly or is it the users? Agree with the above from Misza. IF you don't want the archiving, simply remove the relevant code and the problem is solved. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

No sense of humour about humour

Moreover, anyone who uses humour in Wikipedia (and especially in project space) exhibits a severe lack of respect for those of their fellow editors who have no sense for it. --Hans Adler (talk) 13:30, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Some concepts belong

If it is discussed as a fantasy or concept, it is every bit as valid a subject for an article as if it actually takes place. WP is not conducting a research study into the feasibility of reputed sexual practices. It shouldn't make the least bit of difference one way or the other. DGG 03:39, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

AfD: Bias in the System

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/THUDD

9 unopposed calls for deletion, with one sarcastic "keep for the lulz" resulted in a relisting. The article in question?

THUDD was a parody of the THX opening in movie theatres in the animated TV series Tiny Toon Adventures. The scene would start with a conductor's baton waving through the air and falling down with a huge burst of noise and light blowing back the audience, even catapulting some out of their chairs. The THUDD logo would then be displayed, followed by a message on the screen saying "The Audience is now deaf."

Wow.

Disturbing quotes

"Clearly remember this article being speedied some years ago"

[4]

Because apparently if it was deleted years before, it's fine to WP:CANVAS to get people to snowball the AfD.

You can say that there must be 2 people for an edit war.
And if you don't have to justify yourself for anything, underline your are not a sockpuppet (if you are not one) etc.
I have "blued" your user's page. You know, most people here have american ancestrors. They don't like the "red skins" and so, it is better if you take the "blue" uniform. Don't hesitate to expand this section. (humor)
