Military career
Bethel was one of the first Bahamian recruits to the West Indies regiment, a group known as the "Glorious 30". From private, he was promoted to acting corporal, before [earning/being given] a commission to second Lieutenant General.[2]
Colonial administrator
Acting Colonial Secretary on 17 September 1950 when Governor Sandford died.[1][3] Assumed administration of the government until 27 September when F A Evans returned.[1]
On 31 September, F A Evans was transferred to the Gold Coast and Bethel was appointed Colonial Secretary.[1] Bethel retired in April 1952 and was succeeded as Colonial Secretary by A. G. H. Gardner-Brown.[4]
Honours and Awards
Appointed to be a Companion of the Imperial Service Order (ISO) in 1929.[5] Appointed OBE in the King's New Year's Honours of 1943.[6]
