Nares Strait is a new name. It used to be part of Baffin Bay – in fact it was Baffin Bay, cause Baffin Bay extended all the way to the Lincoln Sea. It does not any more.
In 1964 the name "Nares Strait" (Nares Strædet) was decided by the Danish (Stednavneudvalget now Stednavnenævnet) and Canadian government and the info you removed about the naming is actually correct. It is a retro naming to honor G. S. Nares.
That is why the link to the map you have does not list Nares Strait, because at that time (1953) it was Baffin Bay (usually went under the name Northern Baffin Bay).
Hi again; thanks for the information/history! I was trying to be more descriptive regarding the Nares Strait; I don't think I removed anything initially regarding the name, did I? If I erred, my apologies. In any event, shouldn't you actually include some of the above in the article, yes? :) Thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony00:11, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Assessment
I have assessed this as a Stub, as it only provides the basic information on the topic, and of low importance, as it is a highly specific topic within Canada. Cheers, CP05:03, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
