I understand that it is still colloquially called as the " Black Nazarene" in your search, but a quick skimming of official social media accounts of Quiapo Church yields that they are now implementing the name change. Please refer to the notice the Quiapo Church rector wrote in the notice in the approved missal text of the Feast of the Jesus Nazareno:
"On October 3, 2024, Jose Cardinal Advincula decreed that the official title of Quiapo Church shall henceforth be the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno (Basilika Menor at Pambansang Dambana ni Jesus Nazareno), St. John the Baptist Parish. This decree is “to further focus the people on the holy name of our Lord rather than a color or attribute of the statue” (Black Nazarene).
"It is recommended for presiders and preachers to use “Jesus Nazareno” both in English and Filipino (just as we do not anymore translate Sto. Niño or Lorenzo in English) to establish commonality and to emphasize the holy name of Jesus which is actually the original titular of Quiapo Church and original reason and occasion for the January 9 fiesta celebrations."
The official name of the Feast in the Philippine Ordo is Feast of the Jesus Nazareno (not Feast of the Black Nazarene). Quiapo Church now refers to Feast (both in liturgical and civic sense) as such.
The edits made to indicate that it is still popularly called as "Black Nazarene" is enough. I hope we honor the changes made by RCAM and Quiapo Church on how it is officially called. Minute.berger (talk) 06:21, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand in a faith-sense the rationale seems sounds but WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS apply so Wikipedia usually follows what most RS is saying not just the official sources (which is a mixed bag of Black Nazerene and Jesus Nazarene). I can see in the future that Jesus Nazareno might catch up in the future as more mainstream outlets follow suit with the RCAM decree. Until now then, in my opinion the name should still be Black Nazarene. Wikipedia is not the RCAM and Quiapo Church admin and we follow our own protocols. Also WP:COMMONNAME too, hence we have Malacañang Palace, and not Malacañan Palace, Turkey and Turkiye. Hariboneagle927 (talk) 14:58, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it seems that Tagalog language usage is shifting to "Jesus Nazareno". I'd check English language refs later, but TV news in Tagalog does prefer the "Jesus Nazareno" term. Howard the Duck (talk) 10:50, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
LOL why did you just exclusively use ABS-CBN? I can't even use their website as the citation template doesn't recognize it. Some findings, when I searched "Quiapo Church" a few days before the traslacion:
"Black Nazarene" still is used in headlines by Daily Tribune and Sunstar. Both exclusively use "Black Nazarene" in their news articles.
GMA News uses "Nazarene" in the headline, while the devotees are of the "Black Nazarene", the church is the "Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno", the image is the "Jesus Nazarene" and "Hesus Nazareno" has the feast day. This is on just one article! Another GMA News article uses "Nazareno" in the headline. The feast is of the "Jesus Nazareno", "Jesus Nazareno" is being honored, and the church is "Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno". No mention of "Black Nazarene" except for a link to another news article. On another GMA News article, replicas of the "Black Nazarene" are blessed, "Jesus Nazarene" was celebrated.
ABS-CBN doesn't directly refer to what the object of devotion is on its headline. In the article, the church is "Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno" (same as GMA), devotees give thanks to "Jesus Nazareno".
Inquirer uses "Nazareno" in the headline. The image is the "Black Nazarene", the procession was for the "Nazareno", the feast is of the "Black Nazarene".
Philippine Star uses "Nazarene". The feast is of the "Black Nazarene", they say "Quiapo Church, officially known as the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Black Nazarene" (notice this is different to #2 and #3), the feast is of the "Black Nazarene", which "goes out of the Quiapo Church only three times a year", etc. Star exclusively uses "Black Nazarene".
I can go on and list every WP:RS imaginable (not just ABS-CBN) and you can conclude that not anyone abides by Quiapo Church's instruction to use "Jesus Nazareno", at least in English. It's similar to people insisting to use "ATENEO" instead of "ADMU" because Ateneo's media guide tells them to. LOL tell that to the Lasallians. Move back to Black Nazarene, then revisit in a couple of years. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:00, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
“Even English language ABS-CBN News Channel prefers this over "Jesus Nazareno"
You've then listed Tagalog language news articles from ABS-CBN, where I specifically said English language ABS-CBN News Channel? Aren't Tagalog and English different languages? Howard the Duck (talk) 10:34, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See also WP:OFFICIAL: "While common names are generally preferred over official names as article titles, there are some valid exceptions. These are documented in the specific-topic naming conventions." Howard the Duck (talk) 00:02, 3 January 2025 (UTC).[reply]
Support - Jesus Nazareno seems to be a generic spanish name/title esp. for this art composition of Christ carrying the cross. The Black Nazarene title, although disowned by the church as described above by minute.berger, makes it distinct from the other similar images of devotion.Markoolio97 (talk) 02:27, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support in a short period of time, enwiki doesn't follow official names per WP:OFFICIALNAME. That's why, Ivory Coast over "Côte d'Ivoire", Turkey over "Türkiye", Ma-ayon vs. "Maayon", Mogilev vs. "Mahilyow", Grodno vs. Hrodna, and Bangalore vs. Bengaluru. These and the Black Nazarene article titles can be revisited anytime in the future if the English-language sources shift in usage. JWilz12345(Talk|Contrib's.)10:41, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
