Hi Anwegmann. I changed his description again because it seems wrong to call him a Bahraini, after he has not played for the national team since 2013, fled as a dissident in early 2014. He will never play for them again, has Australian citizenship now, and has said that Australia is his country now. Commenting here in case you or others wish to discuss further... @Laterthanyouthink: I understand what you're saying, and I don't totally disagree with you, but as far as footballing nationality and common WP:FOOTY practice are concerned, he was born in Bahrain and represented them, making him Bahraini. According to WP:MOSETHNICITY, secondary and/or additional citizenships don't belong in the lead, much less as the single nationality listed. His situation is very, very odd, that's for sure, and there's a solid chance that his situation defies regular practice, but I think he should remain "a Bahraini footballer" until otherwise established by consensus. I've noticed an odd trend in articles of footballers related to Australia that seems to run against common WP:FOOTY standards—describing someone in the lead as "Australian" when they were born somewhere else (and in some cases even represented their homeland internationally), have never represented Australia, and only became naturalized Australian citizens later. I'm not saying that has happened here, because this case is unique, but it's just something I've noticed. Anwegmann (talk) 02:46, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I am not familiar with all the rules in WP:FOOTY (although a fan, don't often edit in this area), but as a nation of migrants (quarter of the entire population born elsewhere, half with a parent born elsewhere), most people regard themselves as Australian once they've been here a few years and have citizenship. It's a shame there isn't a spot in the infobox to indicate nationality or citizenship. However, I'm happy to accept whatever the rules currently state. What about a footnote in the lead?
