Merger proposal

I propose that Ecological farming be merged into Organic farming. It appears to duplicate the content of the latter article, which is also titled with the standard/dominant English term, and is widely cited as synonymous (e.g., here). Doremo (talk) 05:06, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree that they were the same thing prior to the advent of organic certification. However, since then they have diverged. What happened is that Organic changed from a producer driven movement to a consumer driven movement. When that happened the focus of organic diverged to a focus of primarily avoiding certain chemicals and GMOs, and the ecology took a secondary role. Thus it is quite possible to find "certified organic" farms that are even worse to the environment than some conventional methods. And also possible to find conventional farms that are most definitely ecological farming. As far as merging the two articles, a discussion of this distinction would have to be included.Redddbaron (talk) 00:12, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with both. Should be combined under "Organic farming", and there should be separate subsections of "Ecological farming" and "Biodynamic farming", which is its oldest form. Forp (talk) 16:22, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And what about ecoagriculture? Surely there doesn't need to be both? I did a bit of cleanup here but before I spend too much time on the article, it needs to be decided about possible mergers.Redddbaron (talk) 04:35, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

according to my view each farming methods has different principles and effects. i think that both the article can be kept separately--பிரபாகரன் 16:27, 28 January 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabaka 123 (talk • contribs)

It's not logical to merge Ecological farming with Organic Farming. Although organic farming is a subset, they're not equivalents. Organic Farming and Organic Horticulture are better to be merged, since if you think about it, how do you know which of the two articles to go to when you simply want to look up organic production. Better yet, split up Organic Horticulture into both Ecological Farming and Organic Farming. A name change to Ecological horticulture is better. I've seen the problem we have now in the article Plant perception (physiology), it was broken down into three different articles, and I didn't know which was the main article to go to. When fixing it, I noticed that one was a duplication then a spinoff. - Sidelight12 Talk 18:41, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion has stalled. I will close it for now and remove the merge tag unless anyone objects. The sourcing which uses the term 'Ecological farming' is limited, but some exists. Sidelight12's suggestion on a possible merge of Organic Farming and Organic Horticulture sounds reasonable. Does anyone have thoughts on why those articles should remain separate? Dialectric (talk) 05:55, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Organic farming is used in much broader sense and has become a standard term. specially when giving certification.Rukn950 (talk)
I would also oppose the merger. I won't take up extra space with my reasons, because they are essentially identical to those of Redddbaron above. Adv4Ag (talk) 21:22, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And since the discussion seems to have slowed down with no real action to complete the merge, I was thinking of just removing the tags. I won't do it for a day or two, though, to give everyone a chance to weigh in. Adv4Ag (talk) 22:16, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Removed the tag. Adv4Ag (talk) 06:31, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Potential Article Edits and Suggestions

Hi. This is an interesting topic with a lot more information available. The challenges section is lacking citations, which are necessary and would strengthen the article. The lead section of this article is a bit confusing due to its organization and wording. For clarity, the lead section should be rewritten and reorganized. The sentence "Ecological farming is recognised as the high-end objective among the proponents of sustainable agriculture," is not a clear definition of ecological farming and should not be the first sentence. It also is ambiguous in who "proponents of sustainable agriculture" are, as well as what a "high-end objective" is. The article would benefit from clarification on both points. --Skezmoh (talk) 05:50, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
