Talk:2018 Iranian water protests

Intention of substantial edit

Dear Wikipedians,

As part of a university project, I intend to make a substantial edit to this page. I will add a 'Background section,' providing information about the 2018 freshwater shortages in Iran, previous water protests, and the larger series of 2018 protests in Iran. I found this information in academic journals and newspaper articles. I also intend to provide further information about the events described in the 'timeline,' as I found a lot of information about these and other water-related protests from March until October 2018. I found the information primarily through newspaper articles, both local and international.

Furthermore, I am currently working on adding a section on 'Government Response' and 'Aftermath.'

In my Sandbox, you can find a draft of my contribution. I will gradually add my contributions up until 9 May, 2023.

Please let me know if you have any concerns regarding my intended edits, or if you have suggestions on what should or should not be included in my contribution.

Other potential water protests

This topic is intended for discussion about the inclusion of other potential water protests in this entry.

Another water-related protest may have taken place in January 2018 in Qahderijan. According to Reuters: "One of the dead was a farmer, CHRI said, and locals said water rights were the main grievance. (...) A journalist in Qahderijan who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue said the attack on the police station was not the right thing to do but that water mismanagement had deprived farmers of their livelihoods." This is the link to the article. To me, it is unclear whether during the protests concerns were voiced over water shortages. If water shortages are a deeper cause of the protest, I don't believe the event should be included. Other sources also do not report any relation to water during the protests in Qahderijan. The entry on the 2018 protests in Iran states that "On 29-31 March, after weeks of protests across the country, mass protests against wate shortages erupted throughout Isfahan." I can find no information that supports this claim, however. Maybe someone else can? Pandrleiden (talk) 20:58, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
On the website of the National Council of Resistance in Iran, it is stated that "[o]n Saturday, April 14, farmers in eastern Isfahan protested for 58th day (...)." While I have included some events that occurred in Isfahan in the beginning of April in this entry, I cannot find support for this claim. I also can find no support for protests in Isfahan in March or February related to water issues. Maybe someone else knows more? On 19 July, 2018, Radio Farda reported that "[e]very day, farmers hold their small protest outside Varzaneh." I can't find any more information about these protests than in the source, which does not specify any dates or other information about the protests, except for mentioning that the protests are 'small.' Perhaps these protests are related? I don't think the protests are significant enough to include in this entry, but maybe someone else has more information. On 13 July, 2018 Al Arabya reported the following:
"Earlier, cities and villages in the provinces of Fars and Bushehr, including Brazzan in southern Iran, witnessed protests where protesters called on the government and officials of the Iranian regime to intervene to find solutions to the water shortage crisis caused by drought and government mismanagement of water resources."
I couldn't find any more information about protests in Brazzan and places in the provinces of Fars in 2018. Does anyone know more about this? Pandrleiden (talk) 11:09, 3 May 2023 (UTC)Pandrleiden (talk) 13:48, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Other previous water protests?

I have added a sub-section on previous water protests. These were the ones I could find, but I can imagine more have taken place, so feel free to add more events to this section. Pandrleiden (talk) 11:10, 3 May 2023 (UTC)M. Pandrleiden (talk) 16:37, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Other international responses?

I am not aware of any more international reactions, but I can imagine other NGO's or states have reacted to the water protests. Feel free to include those if you find them. Pandrleiden (talk) 13:05, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
