Three of his four books have just been released for public viewing at three of Australia's first tier libraries (January 1, 2025) - The National Library of Australia;[2] the State Library of Victoria;[3] and the State Library of Western Australia,[4] Perth Western Australia.[5] He is of indigenous British and Irish descent.[6]
Early life
Early schooling and sport
John Guest (1960-) was raised in the Melbourne suburb of Bellfield and lived there from 1965, until he started his apprenticeship at Newport Railway Workshops, Victoria, in 1978. He first attended Bellfield State School [7] and then Heidelberg Technical School [8]. He played Australian Rules Football at the amateur level, first in juniors grades for Bellfield and then for Bundoora junior football clubs, winning the club's under 18 best and fairest player in 1977.[9]
In 1979, he returned to play for Bellfield senior football team [10] before crossing to Hamersley-Carine Football Club [11] competing in the Perth Football League [12] competition in Western Australia [13].
Whilst playing seniors for the Hammersley-Carine team he was a committee member and club president and league delegate in 1990, the year the club won its second of several premierships [14].
Recently John Guest was inducted into the Hammersley-Carine Football Club's 1980's team of the decade [15]. Upon return to Melbourne in 1992, he went on to become a Director of the Coburg-Fitzroy Lions Football Club [16] [17] playing in the Australian Football League's (AFL), Victorian Football League (VFL) competition from 1999-2000 [18] .
A passionate Fitzroy-Brisbane [19] Lions supporter since childhood, he has maintained his unbroken membership of the now powerful Australian Rules Football club since 1972 (Fitzroy Football Club 1972-1991, Fitzroy Club Support AFL membership 1992-1996, Brisbane Lions Club Support AFL membership 1997 to present). The Fitzroy Football Club and the Brisbane Bears Football Club merged in 1996 to become the Brisbane Lions.
Professional life
John began his career as an apprentice with the Victorian Railways in 1978.[20] He went on to complete degrees at Curtin University Western Australia,[21][22][23][24] and returned with his young family to Melbourne where he completed post graduate degrees at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (R.M.I.T).[25][26]
During his career he held executive roles for Australian education institutes, International Training Australia and Raytheon (USA);[27][28] and was the Principal Technical Capability Building for the Victorian Road Management Authority (VicRoads).[29]
From 1997 to 2001, Guest led the automotive industry driven automotive training modernisation project, Kangan Institute/TAFE Victoria's "Automotive Centre of Excellence" (ACE) at Melbourne's docklands [30][31] along with securing the necessary land in which to construct the "ACE" facilities. Land acquisition was in co-operation with Mr Ron Collins, former Chief Executive Director of Mr Lindsay Fox's Lindsay Fox, Fox Classic Car Collection, Melbourne Museum at Docklands.[32]
In 2020 Guest retired from his role with the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) as the Senior Manager Industry Policy and Government Liaison.[33][34]
Since 2020, he has focused near full time on his research and writing and become more active in his membership of the Australian Institute of Genealogy Studies (AIGS) [35][36] pioneer membership of PASA (Pioneers Association of South Australia); pioneer membership of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV) special interest group, the Port Phillip Pioneers Group (PPPG);[37] and as a member of the RHSV's Hotham History Project.[38]
John Guest (1960-) late career as a researcher and author, came from his passion for British, Irish and Norman history. This same interest is shared by his maternal cousins, Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax who joined him in his research several years ago.
Lille and Halifax contributed family records kept stored along their lines in Australia. In 2023 and 2024 they further joined John as co-petitioners working with the Crown's office to restore their shared ancient bloodlines.
Immediate paternal family
John Guest (1960-) is the first-born son of six children born to Jack Guest (1921-1987) [39] [40] [41] [42] and Norma Irene Guest (1932-2021), nee Hay [43]. Jack is the son of Archie Guest (1866-1932), and grandson of John Kidd Guest (1832-1871) who settled in Melbourne in 1857 from Templemore, Tipperary, Ireland.
John Kidd Guest’s (1832-1871) two older sons, William Langford Guest (1860-1922) [44], and Jack (John) Henry Guest (1862-1922), were both, from 1876 to 1887, pioneer players and administrators for the North Melbourne Football Club (NMFC) and Cricket Clubs.
Archie's older brother Will Guest (1862-1922), coached the North Melbourne Football Club, in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) "second twenty" (reserve team) from 1886-1888. He took them to back-to-back premierships in the VFA reserves in 1886 and 1887 season. [45] These were the first two premierships recorded for the North Melbourne Football Club.
John Guest's paternal great uncle, Will, was also a senior and reserves player for the club between the years 1876-1885. [46] [47] [48] [49] He then went on be a goal umpire in the VFA from 1889-1890. [50] [51] [52]
John Guest's grandfather, Archie Guest (18661932) crossed over from North Melbourne [53] to play seniors with the Williamstown Football Club also playing in the VFA for seasons 1887, [54] [55] 1888 [56] and 1890. [57]
Prior to 1897 and from 1877, the VFA was the elite competition in Victoria. North Melbourne Football Club continues today, and is one of Australia's oldest football clubs.[58] North continues to play in the national elite competition, the Australian Football League (AFL).[59] The AFL sprung from the Victorian Football League (VFL) in the late 1980s.
John Guest's (1960-) great uncle, Archie's middle brother, John ("Jack") Henry Guest 1862-1922) was North Melbourne Cricket Club (Hotham Cricket Club's) secretary in the historical year of the merger with the Hotham Football Club (NMFC). The 1882/3 Victorian Cricket Association (VCA) season. [60]
Guest's first Australian settlers
No fewer than sixteen of John Guest’s lineal ancestors (paternal and maternal) arrived in Australia as free settlers from 1840. The first to arrive was James Logan (1809-1858) who settled in the Colony of South Australia. More arrived soon after to him, and some preferred to settle in the Port Philip District of the Colony of NSW. The district separated from the Colony of NSW in 1851 to become the Colony of Victoria [61] and then, on the 1st January 1901, the Colony of Victoria became the State of Victoria as part of the Commonwealth of Australia [62] .

[104]
- James Sinclair (1821-1893) of Nunraw, Haddintonshire, Scotland, husband of Elizabeth Innes Sinclair (1821-1877) nee Inglis, late of Madeline Street Carlton, Victoria, Australia, arrived in Melbourne from Scotland, via Liverpool and Port Adelaide, aboard the ship Shakmaxon, Skipped by Captain William Henry West along with his wife and infant children. Despite an age listing discrepancy, Matilda appears to have arrived in Melbourne on 24 July 1857, disembarking from the ship Eagle Speed. [123] Matilda and John married in Melbourne in1858.
Pre-Australia, and Ireland, paternal origins
John Guest (1960-) great grandfather, John Kidd Guest (1831-1871) descends from a long line of known bearers of the Guest arms grant granted to Gyles Guest (c1495-1557) in 1543 [124]
Guest's pre-Australian patrilineal ancestors, were first traced through Cloughjordan and Templemore, County Tipperary and Dublin Ireland, back to Tewkesbury, Gloucstershire England.
Gyles Guest (c1495-1557), the earliest verified lineal ancestor of John Guest (1960-) of Melbourne, like many of his patrilineal desendents, was a successful clothier and mercer. He was also a philanthropist of note who settled in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England from Row Heath, Kings Norton Worcestershire. [125] [126] [127]
The Gyles Guest [Giles Geest] Charity Trust [128] he established upon his death continues to this day [129] and is perhaps Britain's longest continuing private charity founded in 1557. [130] Gyles donated 22 houses to the trust upon his death. The homes are provided for Tewkesbury elderly, and the poor. [131] He and wife Alice Guest (c1500-1581), nee Styles (c1500-1581), daughter of Richard Styles Cheltenham's Bailiff in 1554-1555, [132] are John Guest's 11th great grandparents.
Ancient maternal heritage traced to and beyond Hallifax family pedigree Ms 7D14/45
Expert geneaologist examiners, holding senior office with the College of Arms, advising the Sovereign of its content, expressed their opinion in writing that Guest's research represents a "remarkable piece of [genealogical] work [133] ... across what is almost 1000 years" [134], gathering the Guest families maternal Hallifax records to susequently prove they were tied irrevocably to the College of Arms record, Ms &D14/45 last updated 16th December 1788.
Crown examiner's verified his and his relatives, ancient lineage, cousins by degree, renounded Australian international cricketer, Dennis Lillee [135] and Darren Halifax, present head of the College of Arms, Hallifax family, Ms 7D14/45, 16 December 1788.
Dennis and Darren Halifax, joined John to petition the Crown to have their mixed male-female lineage recognised beyond the Hallifax family pedigree Ms &D14/45.
The Crown's expert examiners upheld the various bloodlines that Guest found flowed back to their Hallifax ancestors listed in the College of Arms record Ms 7D14/45. Including their shared descent from King Malcolm III (1031-1093) [136] and Queen Margaret (1045-1093) of Scotland,[137] [138].
Dr Mark Humphrys (2022) has shown through computing sciences that today, there are probably around 3 million people out there who descend from William the Conqueror. Suggesting to some that Guest, Lillee and Halifax's descent as commoners in itself, is not unique. If one is to consider that three million people from today's gloabal population of 8.2 billion, represents a minisure amount of descendents extant. [139] [140]
Understood is that Guest, Lillee and Halifax are the only known commoners from this probable cohort to have evidence of their shared line of dynastic descent spanning nearly 1000 years verified and validated by the Crown's expert genealogical examiners.
The evidence Guest gathered was deemed to be equivalent to the standard required for proving one's bloodline expected in a peerage claim. [141] [142] [143] [144]
Sufficiently satisfied with the quality of evidence and findings that Guest provided, His Majesty King Charles III, via his examiner, invited him and his co-petitioners Dennis and Darren after the 22nd January 2024, to submit a "Supplemental Petition" [145] to the Crown. The discrete purpose of the 2024 Supplemental Petition was to request that His Majesty, King Charles III,[146] consider declaring the ancient post conquest peerage created by William I for Margaret's brother, Edgar the Atheling, the Earl of Oxford, 1st Creation, December 1066.[147]
In the expert opinion of the Crown's examiner, he found Guest's work to be: "... an impressive piece of research, I think many dogmatic, or academic types, would never have thought it possible to gather together evidence, [148] ... that maybe able to show that there was an Earldom of Oxford created in 1067".[149] [150]
Letter of expert opinion
Guest consulted leading expert, Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge, to review his evidence submitted in the draft "Supplementary Petition." Licence, in his "Letter of Expert Opinion" determined, "In conclusion I find in favour of the petitioners statement, that on the balance of probabilities, Edgar the Atheling, was created Earl by William I ...", further attests to the level of professionalism and the quality of his genealogical research work and authorship.[151]
Crown's recognition of Guest's research
Noteworthy is that the expert examiner advising the Crown, subsequently placed the Guest Family History materials [152] in the College of Arms, Crown Peerage Claims Records Library;[153] and also in the Crown Office.[154] Placed there also, is a letter verifying the authenticity of the Guest family of Melbourne's ancestral bloodlines, spanning "what is almost 1000 years." [155]
Due to the recency of his works becoming available since through libraries in Australia and England, only since the 5th of November 2024, Guest is still relatively unknown. Guest's notariety as a genealogical researcher and author of note, may however, grow, given the Crown's verification of his "nearly 1000 year" long bloodlines,[155][153][149][143][144]
Guest's four books
The four books in the Guest Family History consituting the complete set, with three of the four books only, made available to these public libraries since the 5th November, 2024, are these:
- Guest Family History, Paternal Trace, Volume I, 24 September 2024.[156]

Preservation of Guest's books by first tier libraries of Australia
Guest Family History books,[152] were published for a discrete purpose and intentional was the very limited number of books published. All books are numbered as part of a limited collection with a fourth book, the 2023 first petition remaining private. The scarcity of each of the four volumes and as complete set, unintentionally adds to the appeal of Guest's research.
That said, three of Australia's 1st tier libraries care for their preservation, as part of their collection, and offer private reading sessions to those wishing to read his books.
The State Library of Victoria (SLA) [168] and State Library of Western Australia (SLWA),[169] as well as the National Library of Australia (NLA), have committed to housing and taking care of these new books;[152] and to make them available to the people for their research and enjoyment.
Ms Hawkins (NLA),[170] Messrs Ferdinands (SLV),[168] Messrs Black (SLWA) [169] and all recognised the significance of the works in which Guest (2023, 2024) capturing from a family history perspective, a lot of otherwise lost early Australian free settler family history, which occurred in the Colony of South Australia; Colony of Western Australia; and the Colony of Victoria and Port Phillip District.
Recent award nomination
The Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies (AIGS), recognising the veracity of Guest's (20024) evidenced based genealogical research work, [143] [144] after considering further the Crown's examiner's verification of bloodlines,[171] [172] as well as the AIGS's examination of Professor Tom Licence's "Letter of Expert Opinion." [173] All of which the AIGS further found t o further strengthen the o the quality of Guest's work, and on the 4th November, 2024, short listed "Guest Family History Volume I Paternal Trace, Volume II Maternal Heritage and Volume III Supplemental Petition" [174] for the Alexander Henderson Award, 2023-2024. The award is for the "Best Australian Family History" research publication.[175]
