Hayden Jones (born 30 August 2006) is an Australian tennis player.

Early life

Jones was born and raised on the Gold Coast, Queensland,[1] where he attended Coomera Anglican College.[2] His mother, Loretta Harrop, is an Olympic silver medallist triathlete and his father, Brad Jones, is a former Australian rules footballer who won the 1999 Grogan Medal.[3] His sister, Emerson, is also a tennis player ranked number one in the ITF junior female rankings as of December 2024.[4][5]

Junior career

Jones entered his first ITF U18 tournament at 14 years of age when he was granted a wildcard entry into a J3 Mornington event in April 2021[6] and won his two opening rounds before being defeated by Cooper White in the quarterfinals. He reached his first U18 ITF Junior final a month later in a J5 Darwin tournament, but was defeated in straight sets in the final. Jones made his junior Grand Slam debut at 15 years of age when he was granted a wildcard entry into the 2022 Australian Open main draw and pulled off an impressive first round victory over the 15th seed Bor Artnak.[7] He recorded a second Grand Slam win in the second round, before falling to the eventual finalist Jakub Mensik in the third round.[8]

In August 2022, still aged 15, Jones won his first and second ITF U18 titles in consecutive weeks at JB2 and Grade 2 Sydney tournaments when he defeated Frenchman Charlie Camus in both finals and entered the top 50 in the junior rankings as a result.[9] In 2023, he competed in all four junior Grand Slams for the first time and ended the year ranked 24th in the junior rankings.[10] Jones reached the 2024 Australian Open quarterfinal where he was defeated by eventual finalist Jan Kumstát in three tight sets.[11] He entered the top 10 of the ITF junior rankings in May 2024 after several capturing several titles throughout Asia.[12] He ended his junior career by competing in the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Finals with other top 8 junior players from around the world and finished 6th in the final standings.[13]

Professional career

Jones contested his first professional event at 15 years of age when he was given a wildcard entry into qualifying draw for the 2022 Traralgon International event in January 2022 and was defeated in the first round by former number 10 ranked Ernests Gulbis 3–6, 5–7. He won his first professional match a month later when he was victorious in the first round of an M25 Canberra event.[14] He competed in the 2024 Australian Open qualifying tournament after being handed a wildcard entry and was defeated in the first round by Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three sets.[15]

Jones will contest the 2025 Australian Open qualifying event after being granted a wildcard.[16]
