Summary

Description The Public Theater of the New York Shakespeare Festival at 425 Lafayette Street in the former Astor Library Building. The building was constructed between 1853 and 1881: the south wing (1849-1853) was designed by Alexander Saeltzer, the center section (1856-1869) by Griffith Thomas, the north wing (1879-1881) by Thomas Stent. The conversion into a theatre center occured in 1967-1976, designed by Giorgio Cavaglieri. Between library and theatre it was the Hebrew Immigrat Aid Society.
