File:King Edward VII. as a sportsman (1911) (14773846861).jpg

Original file (2,592 × 1,652 pixels, file size: 570 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Summary

Description
English: King Edward VII with one of his horses, Minoru. The photograph would likely have been taken around the time of Minoru's wins in 1909, when Jones was his jockey. This is unlikely to have been on a race day as King Edward at this time was photographed in formal wear (black suit and top hat) during race days.

Left to right:

  1. Herbert Jones (jockey) riding Minoru
  2. Richard Marsh (horse trainer)
  3. Lord Marcus Beresford (Equerry)
  4. King Edward VII

Of course His Majesty obeyedtradition in going down to meet his horse, makinghis way as best he could, with such escort as thepolice were able to afford, through the dense massof humanity. Again and again the cheers broke out.It was with difficulty that a path for the horses couldbe cleared, but at length Jones found his way to theneighbourhood of the enclosure, where the leadingrein was buckled on, and the King led back hischampion. To more than one of his friends heafterwards declared that the heartfelt enthusiasm of hispeople was before all else what had made him happy. But the Oaks was never to come to His Majesty.When the barrier was raised for the fillies race, tothe consternation of Electras friends, it was seen thatshe was hopelessly left at the post. It is always ofcourse regrettable that any runner should not havea fair chance, but here there was a mitigation in the 214

7^ ^ 5^ ^ Racing idea that a dangerous rival—the most dangerous ofall indeed, as it appeared—was removed from thepath of Princesse de Galles. There seemed nothingbut Perola to beat ; and in the One Thousand Guineasshe had been as much as four lengths behind thedaughter of Gallinule and Ecila. Here at the dis-tance the Royal filly looked quite likely to win, but shecould not resist the challenge, and was second, as shehad been at Newmarket a month before. The truthwith reference to Princesse de Galles was that she couldnot stay ; no doubt six furlongs was her best distance,and the Oaks course is twelve. It is strange that HisMajesty should have won the Derby and been secondfor the Oaks again, as he was in 1900. The Oaks Stakes of ^4950. About a mile and a half. Mr. William Coopers Perola . . F. This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

The author died in 1947, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 75 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

This file has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
This image was taken from Flickr's The Commons. The uploading organization may have various reasons for determining that no known copyright restrictions exist, such as:
  1. The copyright is in the public domain because it has expired;
  2. The copyright was injected into the public domain for other reasons, such as failure to adhere to required formalities or conditions;
  3. The institution owns the copyright but is not interested in exercising control; or
  4. The institution has legal rights sufficient to authorize others to use the work without restrictions.
