De Cessna O-2A kent haar oorsprong in het midden van de Vietnam-oorlog, toen de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten een betrouwbaar en rugged toestel zochten voor Forward Air Control, het opsporen en markeren van gronddoelen voor de grote, snelle en hoogvliegende bommenwerpers. Tussen 1967 en 1970 produceerde Cessna in Wichita ruim vijfhonderd O-2's. Het exemplaar van de Stichting Postbellum (registratie N590D) is gebouwd in 1967 en heeft bijna drie jaar dienst gedaan in Vietnam onder registratie USAF 21-300, waarna ze terug werd gevlogen naar de Verenigde Staten.
