English: (Palmetto Tree shape is a guess)
"...Immediately above his head, adjusted on a board, was the following inscription, " A Traitor's Reward ;" still higher up was a bald-headed eagle — stuffed— looking down complacently on the effigy below. Still higher from the flag-staff floated the American flag with all its stars and stripes in their place, the emblem of natonal pride and honor. Attached to and covering the back of the effigy was a white piece of canvas with a Palmetto Tree painted in black, without any inscription thereon."
On Friday, the members of Eureka Engine Co. No. 4, in Sacramento, hung an effigy in front of their house, on the back of which was a Palmetto flag. It was removed by the police.
