DescriptionBattle Scene, by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg
English: Battle Scene. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, 28.6 × 44.1 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel.
This is the central section of a drawing, trimmed from a larger composition. An adapted copy by another hand, extending further to the right and left, is in the Albertina, Vienna. Holbein has applied wash to the figures in the middle, leaving those on the left sketchy. The battle depicted is not known, but a soldier on the right wears the cross of St Andrew, identifying him as a landsknecht, a German mercenary pikeman (Müller, 320–22).
