The old city of Sana'a is surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand 9–14 m high, and have a length of 6200 meters. The wall dates back to the old Sabaean era, and has six gates, of which Bab-ul-Yemen is certainly the most iconic. In ancient times, the gates on the wall were closed by eight o'clock pm and reopened at dawn with the first prayer of the day.
