An elective dictatorship[1] is a hypothetical form of government where the head of state wields autocratic powers, however the head of state comes to power through election. Such a government form aims to give the pros of a dictatorship with none of the cons. Such form has been proposed, though it remains non-serious. The goal of an elective dictatorships is to get the pros of a merit based election where people can prove their expertise while also ensuring that the corruption and cons of dictatorships, mainly totalitarian rule do not happen.[2]

Examples

Although technically not fitting the meaning, Nazi Germany is often called an elective dictatorship due to the party being elected into office and later taking dictatorial powers.[3]
