1987 single by LeVert
"Casanova " is a 1987 single by American R&B vocal group LeVert , written and produced by Reggie Calloway . It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number nine on the UK Singles Chart , LeVert's only Top Ten (and Top-40) on either chart. It was the first new jack swing song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart. It topped the chart for two weeks, becoming the group's second number-one.[ 2] It has become a standard number for New Orleans brass bands following its popularization by the Rebirth Brass Band .[ 3] The song is featured in 1987's The Pick-Up Artist , starring Robert Downey Jr. and Molly Ringwald , and appears on the soundtrack album of the Whoopi Goldberg movie Fatal Beauty , released the same year.
Music video The official music video was directed by Jane Simpson .[ 4]

L.A.B. version
New Zealand pop-reggae band L.A.B. released a cover of the song on 22 September 2023.[ 44] L.A.B.'s version was produced by band member Brad Kora.[ 45] The band's vocalist Joel Shadbolt felt that their rendition was more upbeat and "hyped up" compared to their typical reggae-influenced music.[ 46]
The song was released just prior to the band's October European tour,[ 44] and is the second single taken from their sixth album, released in February 2024.[ 46] In its first week, the song reached number 39 on the New Zealand Singles Chart ,[ 47] and was the second-highest performing track by a New Zealand artist that week.[ 48]
