Biography
Anisuzzaman was born on March 1, 1951, in Gopalganj, East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to Shahida Begam and Abul Hossain Molla.[1]
He finished his BA and MA degrees in philosophy from Dhaka University in 1972 and 1973, respectively. In October 1977, he joined the faculty at the University of Chittagong as a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. After a little more than two years there, he returned to Dhaka, where he completed a MPhil degree from Dhaka University in 1981. The next year he became an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy there.[1]
Anisuzzaman received a Commonwealth Scholarship to study philosophical anthropology at the University of Wales in the UK.[1][2] There he earned a PhD in 1988 for his dissertation, The Concept of Man: Dualism and the Western Tradition.[1][3]
That year, Dhaka University promoted him to associate professor, and to professor in 1993.[1] He carried out postdoctoral research in comparative theology at Andrews University in the US in 1994.[2] Back at Dhaka University, he served as chair of the philosophy department for two months in 1997. He left on a Commonwealth Fellowship for King's College London.[1] There he conducted further research on comparative religion and philosophical anthropology.[2] In 1998, he returned to Dhaka University, where he continued to chair the philosophy department until 2000. He directed two centers within the department: the Dev Centre for Philosophical Studies from 2001 to 2005 and the Moral Development Centre from 2010 to 2013.[1]
Anisuzzaman was appointed vice-chancellor of Global University Bangladesh, a private university in Barisal, in 2019. He was their first vice-chancellor.[4][5] In 2023, he was reappointed for a second four-year term.[6] He resigned on December 8, 2024.[7]
