The 48th Separate Assault Battalion named for Noman Çelebicihan, (Ukrainian: 48-й окремий штурмовий батальйон ім. Номана Челебіджіхана, Crimean Tatar: Noman Çelebicihan Batalyonı), formerly known as the Noman Çelebicihan Battalion, is a unit of Armed Forces of Ukraine. The battalion currently forms part of the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade (Ukraine).[3] The unit was first formed in 2016, by Crimean Tatar volunteers opposed to Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, but was disbanded that same year.[4]

Many of battalion's former soldiers returned to military service in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The 48th Assault Battalion was eventually reconstituted from elements of the 251st Territorial Defense Battalion. Though the unit is named for a famous Crimean Tatar politician, and many of its officers and enlisted men are Crimean Tatars, it is not a monoethnic unit, and any Ukrainian citizen can join.[3] Most of its soldiers come from the South of Ukraine and Russian-occupied Crimea.

History

The battalion emerged from participants in the 2015 activist-led blockade of Crimea that stopped Ukrainian cargo from reaching the Crimean peninsula.[5][6][7] The battalion was planned to include 560 people.[5]

The Crimean Tatar battalion reportedly received assistance from a volunteer Turkey in 2016 shortly after founding.[2]

In 2016 the battalion helped the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in the region bordering Crimea. The battalion virtually ceased to exist around the end of the same year, with many of its volunteers joining other battalions or enlisting into the Ukrainian army.[7]

Crimean News Agency [tr] (Crimean Tatar: Qırım Haber Ajansı) reported that the battalion was formed again on February 24, 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[1]

On June 1, 2022, the Supreme Court of Russia labeled the Noman Çelebicihan Battalion as a terrorist organization.[8]

At the beginning of December 2024, the 48th Assault Battalion successfully dislodged Russian forces from the village of Novyi Komar, which they had occupied in an ongoing attempt to encircle the nearby town of Velyka Novosilka.[9]

On January 8, 2024, the battalion was deployed to the city of Pokrovsk. On January 18, servicemen of the battalion released an appeal to Oleksandr Syrskyi, in which they complained about the replacement of their commander and the lack of necessary intelligence information after the redeployment.[10]
