The 2023 Makkah hotel fire occurred on May 19, 2023, when a fire took place in a hotel in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. There were many Pakistani Umrah pilgrims who were among the victims of the hotel fire that killed eight people and injured six others.
The fire
At least eight Pakistani Umrah pilgrims died in a hotel fire in Makkah on 19 May 2023, and numerous others were injured. Initial information was provided by the Pakistan Consul Welfare, which stated that four of the deceased had been identified, with two of them coming from Kasur and the other two from Vihari. The identification of the remaining bodies was still in progress.[1][2]
The Pakistan Foreign Office immediately got in touch with the local authorities after learning about the incident to offer the victims and their families a lot of support. The spokesperson for the Foreign Office confirmed the eight fatalities and the ongoing medical care for six injured people.[3]
Assistance and reactions
Assisting the affected people and their families as needed, the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah closely coordinated relief efforts with local authorities. For complete support, the Foreign Office kept in constant contact with the Saudi authorities.[4]
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Pakistani government have both expressed their profound sorrow and grief over the deaths of Pakistani pilgrims. The Ministry of Religious Affairs was instructed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to provide the best medical care for the injured and to provide the families of the deceased with all necessary support. The government's prompt response was evidence of its dedication to offering assistance during this trying time.[5]
Kamran Tessori, the governor of Sindh, also expressed his deep sorrow and sent his condolences to the victims' families. He emphasized his unwavering support for the families of the victims and extended his condolences to them.[6]
