The Cavaliers were led by fourth-year head coach Frank Murray and played their home games at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. They competed as independents, finishing with a record of 4–5.
Virginia was ranked at No. 97 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.[2]
