Former Democratic-Republican Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates John Tyler Sr. defeated fellow Democratic-Republican nominee and incumbent Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Hugh Nelson in a Virginia General Assembly vote.[1] General electionOn election day, 30 November 1808, Democratic-Republican nominee John Tyler Sr. won the election against fellow Democratic-Republican candidate Hugh Nelson.
