Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and climb the leaderboard. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Syria is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest and articles related to it are eligible to be submitted for points, so I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Append your name to the DCWC signup page today!

Women in Green's October 2024 edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Syria:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Creation of Portal:Syria

It's probably appropriate that the Portal:Syria is created, as the current portal Portal:Asia is too wide in scope. This is not my area of expertise and adding here for discussion, or to inspire potential creation by interested editors. Rangasyd (talk) 10:00, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ba'athist Syria

If the ongoing rebel offensives against the Assad's government result in his overthrow and the end of the regime (which currently seems as a likely outcome), a new article should be created – encompassing the period of the Ba'athist rule over Syria; it should be modeled on Ba'athist Iraq. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 14:32, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of Arms direction

It appears the new transitional government is using the coat of arms with the hawk facing its right as opposed to the left, also it has the black lines along the wings (not just golden contrast), based on the latest documentation published on the official government-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). Page on future Syrian elections

Hi, hope y'all are doing well. I recently found out the page Draft:Next Syrian presidential election, which was originally created by another editor, then sent to draftspace. I later expanded the article to include background and the info that the new government has said about the elections so far. Obviously, there isn't much information yet on this issue, but the topic is certainly notable in light of recent events. I submitted the draft for submission, but Johannes rejected it on the grounds of original research. I don't completely agree, as all my additions are factual statements about what different people have said, and they are sourced by news articles. However, I also acknowledge that there is still much uncertainty on this issue as of right now, so I understand some hesitancy in publishing the article. I have considered that maybe the "presidential" in the title may pose an issue? The transitional government hasn't confirmed yet the new system of government after all. I would also strongly prefer to have the page name opened, at least as a redirect to somewhere else. What are your thoughts and comments on this? Thanks!

@Johannes, @Dn9ahx, @Abo Yemen, @CMD, and other editors for discussion. TeddyRoosevelt1912 (talk) 20:31, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, there isn't much information yet on this issue – This is why Wikipedia should not (yet) have an article on it. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, i.e., it has articles on subjects that are believed to be established knowledge. There are no secondary sources. Nobody knows for certain at this point whether or not elections will be held.
Articles on the reign of King William of England or the Presidency of Walter Steinmeier's successor would be more sensible than this, simply, because there's more certainty to that – yet, there aren't any secondary sources either (so no articles can be composed yet).
If any Syrian election will ever be notable, eventually, some smart historian, sociologist or any other scholar will discuss it in a high-quality secondary source work. The creation of such work requires an election though. Enough said. Best, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 22:07, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say it's OR, but it's also less about a specific election and more about the concept of elections. I come up somewhat undecided. That said, I went to look at Elections in Syria. This is a very empty article, much could fit there. CMD (talk) 23:39, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see no problems with an article on the next presidential elections existing as there are lots of articles like that on Wikipedia, for example: Next Yemeni presidential election (an arguably worse article than that draft), Next South Korean presidential election (another election with an undetermined date), next Spanish general election, etc etc 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 05:51, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
