ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:43, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for James Smart (police officer)

On 2 December 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article James Smart (police officer), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Chief Constable James Smart flooded police courts with over 17,000 cases to prove how impractical it was for home owners to light their own stairs? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/James Smart (police officer). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, James Smart (police officer)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

There is a mop reserved in your name

You are a remarkable editor in many ways. You would be a good administrator, in my opinion, and appear to be well qualified. You personify an administrator without tools and have gained my support already!

Article rename

Hello, you recently moved St Johns Shopping Centre to St John's Shopping Centre, Liverpool. Please can you indicate where the punctuation has come from? It isn't present on official name or branding. The Liverpool variant is the only one, that I can see, using that name styling specifically and therefore, i'd have thought holding the parent title would be sufficient, or at least, an WP:RM would have been advisable. Bungle (talk • contribs) 18:36, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bungle: consistency with the commons category, St John's Shopping Centre, Perth and St John's Market. I have moved it back. Sahaib (talk) 18:59, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The commons category is also wrong, however this merely picked up the erroneous naming format of the time. The commons cat could/should perhaps just be renamed also. You didn't respond to the WP:RM suggestion, although I am on the fence whether it's worth pursuing, but i'd have thought it perhaps should have been considered initially. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of McMaster University people, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ajax. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

DYK for Amer Ghalib

On 12 December 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Amer Ghalib, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the city council of Hamtramck, led by Mayor Amer Ghalib, banned the pride flag from publicly owned flagpoles? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Amer Ghalib. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Amer Ghalib), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Hello Sahaib,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged W.R. Weaver Co. for deletion, because it's a redirect from an article title to a namespace that's not for articles.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Prods on academics

Hello Sahaib -- I notice that you've prodded a number of academics recently, at least three of which have been contested: Jennifer Hicks very clearly meets WP:PROF via citation profile, and I'd say probably Elena Gutierrez-Farewik and possibly Jakub Szefer too. It's usually best to send academics to Articles for deletion (and tag them with the academics and educators deletion sort) unless Google Scholar shows hardly any evidence of citations; anyone with >1000 citations in total or a single paper with >100 citations really needs a discussion, and in low-citation fields potentially much less than that. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 23:41, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Espresso Addict: it might be best if I avoid reviewing these types of pages but I think the problem with these articles is that all of them cite their own university(s) and when that is one of the only sources, it doesn't really show that they are notable. Sahaib (talk) 06:51, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Academics are specifically exempt from GNG. They need to pass WP:PROF, and if they do so, then their university profile/university-hosted CV is considered acceptable to write a short article on them. Until you understand how PROF works, then you should avoid patrolling articles on academics. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 17:39, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
