Trinity Zion Armstrong (born July 25, 2007) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a center back for San Diego Wave FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played one season of college soccer for the North Carolina Tar Heels, which she helped lead to the 2024 national championship. She won bronze with the United States at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
Early life and college career
Armstrong was raised in Frisco, Texas, with two older brothers. Her mother, Karla Nunn, played college soccer for Kentucky. Armstrong attended Hebron High School for a year before enrolling in IMG Academy in Florida, where she was named team captain and most valuable player as a sophomore. She graduated one year early to begin college at age 17.[2][3] She trained with National Women's Soccer League club Racing Louisville FC as a non-roster invitee before starting college.[4]
North Carolina Tar Heels
Armstrong made 21 appearances (all starts) in her freshman season with the North Carolina Tar Heels. She missed six games while at 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup; without her, North Carolina went 3–3, while with her, they went 19–2.[2][5] On her return from the World Cup, facing rivals Duke in the semifinals of the ACC tournament, she scored her first college goal and saved a shot off the goal line in a 2–1 comeback victory.[3] She played every minute of the NCAA tournament after the first round, helping North Carolina concede only one goal in six games as they won their 23rd national title and first since 2012. She received second-team All-American, first-team All-ACC, and NCAA all-tournament honors after the season.[2][6]
Club career
San Diego Wave
San Diego Wave FC announced on January 16, 2025, that they had signed Armstrong on a three-year contract.[7]
International career
Armstrong was called into camp with the United States national under-15 team in 2022.[8] She won the Montaigu Tournament with the under-16 team the following year.[9] She started four of five games as the under-17 team won the 2024 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship.[4] She played every minute of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, helping keep four clean sheets in six matches as the United States finished in third place, its best result since 2008.[2]
