The Misfits Podcast is a former podcast and associated group of content creators based for the majority of its life in Melbourne, Australia.
History
The show began over gaming voice chat platform Discord, with its host spread between Australia (Bradford), New Zealand (McKay, Lyons, Jay) and The United States of America (Swaggersouls & Matt), however from late 2018, the podcast was hosted in the groups share house, and later office, in Melbourne. Within the first 10 episodes, the podcast had reached high into Spotify's top podcasts, an achievement the group showed their confusion towards as they looked at the podcast as something less serious as it had become, as a result of this achievement, the podcast became one of the first on Spotify to host video podcast streaming.[1]
On December 3rd, 2018, the group launched a YouTube channel on which they posted in-real-life content such as pranks and road trip vlogs.[2]
In late 2022, sexual misconduct allegations lead the group to disband, ceasing all Podcast and YouTube content. Since the group's disbandment, many of its members have collaborated on individual projects such as commentary videos in games such as Counter-Strike 2. (Formerly Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) and In person vlogs.[3]
Segments and content
The show often opened with a host reading a review from iTunes (Apple Podcasts), often resulting in a joking or insulting response, depending on the content of the review. Throughout most episodes, the group displayed their abilities in improvisational comedy, such as episode #78 ‘the MURDER story’, where McKay, Lyons and Swagger' improvised a tale of McKay assisting Lyons in hiding a body following a murder, with Lyons taking a digger into McKay’s back yard in the middle of the night to “install a pool”, as a cover for using a digger at such a late hour.[4]
The podcast is generally regarded by some as offensive, due to the groups policy of being calm with the usage of slurs, and other vulgar language given it is used in a valid context, not directly used harmfully towards a specific group. Such humour has caused drama for some members in situations of crossing into different audiences, due to not conforming with politically correct.[5]
Distribution
The Misfits Podcast was distributed on streaming platforms Spotify[6], Apple Podcasts (Formerly iTunes) and YouTube.[7] In 2020, The podcast received an exclusivity deal from Spotify, resulting in all episodes being released a week early on Spotify going forward.[8]
