Talk:2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Inaugural tournament

I think it is the right time to remove the intro text that says "planned 21st edition of the FIFA Club World Cup" as well as the section right after claiming Man City as the defending champions as this is clearly not the case when you read this official article[1] by FIFA . This is a brand new competition, it is stated everywhere in this article (new club tournament / new tournament will be played for the first time / when 32 of the globe's leading teams gather in the USA for the inaugural edition / The first edition of FIFA's new prime club competition / The official FIFA Club World Cup Trophy, that will be lifted for the first time in 2025 / The new trophy.... will be presented to the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup winners / etc), and this page should also reflect that. Even the page of 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup states that it is also an inaugural competition despite clearly using the same format as the old Club World Cup. Therefore, seeing as there are a few common people "in charge" of this page, please fix those phrases to indicate that this is indeed a first-edition, inaugural tournament with no defending champion!

Look at the "Archive 2" section of this talk page at the link up above near the contents. There’s already been a thorough discussion of that issue. 1995hoo (talk) 12:36, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Shame because if those that dont want to change the section to inaugural, whatever, but surely its vital to remove Man City as "defending champions"... Makes this page genuinely a source of misinformation from the start. Cisco style (talk) 14:17, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, those discussions were from before the 2024 Intercontinental Cup. I agree that we don't need to rehash the same points over and over again but if there's new information out there, a discussion is warranted. It did feel like the consensus was starting to shift towards the end of Archive 2. BLAIXX 16:18, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is true. Consensus was also to wait until closer to the tournament and we are probably at that point as more publicity is happening around the world. I would agree that everything seems to be published as "new" now and all references to a prior version are no longer present at FIFA. New trophy unveiled. I should have added that I don't feel strongly about the issue one way or the other. If someone decides to revisit the issue and conduct a new discussion, I probably won't participate because I don't pay that much attention to the issue. The only major point I'd likely have is that while the first comment in this section refers to an "official article by FIFA," Wikipedia's policy is not to be bound by what someone calls "official" versus what the common usage is, and you guys have made that point already. 1995hoo (talk) 19:59, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I completely agree, this article is outdated and contains erroneous information. In my opinion, we cannot have an article about such an important tournament with such a mistake here on Wikipedia. I am referring to the fact that the article treats this tournament as a continuation of the old FIFA tournament that was held until 2023 and later became known as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
I am a frequent reader of Wikipedia, but I didn't have an account. I decided to create one to correct some errors and this was one of them.
I completely agree that a change should be made to correct this article, as it is now clear that this will be the first edition of a new tournament, as evidenced by how FIFA and important secondary sources have been referring to the tournament for some time. Additionally, I also reviewed earlier discussions. From what I could gather, with the sources presented and even what was being circulated at the time, there was indeed a lot of contradictory information until the beginning of last year, not only from relevant secondary sources but also from FIFA itself. However, since mid-last year, the reality has been that a pattern began to form and the tournament started to be treated more and more as the first edition of a new tournament. This became increasingly clear, especially since the end of last year, when it was firmly established that this tournament is indeed the first edition of a new tournament and that has not changed to this day. From what I have observed from previous discussions, since mid-last year, the number of people in favor of the change has only grown and the main argument against the change was to "give it time," meaning waiting until the tournament got closer to see if the pattern was established, and that is exactly what happened.
Today, when you read this Wikipedia article, the impression you get is that it is completely outdated and out of step with reality. Therefore, I propose updating it to align with the current reality. Football2025 (talk) 05:57, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Write on "Venues": Contrary to other FIFA tournaments, including the Upcoming 2026 FWC, venues will keep their naming rights intact. Source: 1 2 Hyperba21 (talk) 02:13, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the discussion surrounding the topic Inaugural tournament, created by Cisco style, I am opening this extended-confirmed-protected edit request to correct inaccuracies in the article, as it currently leads to misinformation. The corrections are based on primary and secondary sources, as well as consensus. The following changes should be made:

  • Change "planned 21st edition" to "1st edition."
  • Remove "Manchester City is the defending champion."
  • Remove "← 2023" from the infobox.
  • In the team participation section, update to "1st" for all teams.
