DescriptionWWII Veteran still in service (7314833760).jpg
SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Mich. -- The Lee A. Tregurtha is one of a handful of vessels still operating on the Great Lakes that saw service during World War Two. After her launch as a tanker in 1942, she was commissioned by the U.S. Navy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet as the USS Chiwawa carrying fuel. Decommissioned in 1946 she spent several years in private service as a tanker. In 1961, after being lengthened and converted to haul ore she made her debut on the Great Lakes. The Lee A. Tregurtha still proudly wears her campaign ribbons. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photography by Michelle Hill)
