Draft:Parody account
A parody account is a type of account that mimics a character from real life or a piece of fictional media.[1] Parody accounts gained notability after a parody of Elon Musk surfaced onto the internet. Parody Accounts are commonly found on Twitter (currently known as 'X').
Parody accounts normally satirise the personality of the person mimicked,[1] even to the point of intense political views and major controversial topics.[citation needed]
Identifying a parody account
Per X's Terms of Service, parody accounts are now required to put an indicator that they are a parody account,[2] most commonly found in the name or bio of the account.[citation needed]
Misconceptions
Contrary to popular belief, Parody Accounts and Roleplay Accounts are not classified as the same (albeit some Parody/RP accounts have combined both), but the definition of both remain unclear.
Controversies
On June 26th, 2024, a parody account on Twitter called @deerparkpd, was created, impersonating the Police Department of the fictional village of Deer Park. The account soon received a verification badge on X that shows that they were a real police agency, despite being a parody.[3] However, there was a real location in the U.S called Deer Park, located in Texas. Upon learning this, the account owners immediately announced that they were a parody, and their verification status was removed.[3]
