Thiru page edits

Hi there! I’m reaching out because I saw your edits to the Thiru Vignarajah page and I’m a little concerned that they do not follow Wikipedia’s requirements for reliable sourcing. As you can see on https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:RS/SPS&redirect=no, self-published sources (like The Suiter Files blog page) are not considered reliable sources and should never be used unless backed up by a published article in a reliable source. Please let me know if you will address this.

Thank you. 2601:14A:C201:56B0:E1E1:6A2E:DD54:B683 (talk) 14:29, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. I've removed the edits that don't have reliable sources. Y2hyaXM (talk) 16:24, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I watch the page also. I agree that Justine Barron's site is not WP:RS. The Baltimore Brew looks fine though. I also find it interesting that the IP user appears to be a WP:SPA for watching Thiru's page. Adoring nanny (talk) 16:43, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, should I revert my most recent edit to re-write the new section based on content in the Baltimore Brew article instead of The Suiter Files? Y2hyaXM (talk) 17:16, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As a general matter, I can't tell you what to do per WP:CANVASS. Adoring nanny (talk) 12:14, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Aruna Miller Hindutva text

Hello, I saw your recent revision after my edit on Aruna Miller’s page and I want to voice my agreement with the edit you made. I disagreed with removing all reference to the issue entirely but I feel what you did in referencing the issue, and the Moore campaign addressing it on their website, is a good solution. Barbarbarty (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also left a couple of links on the talk page for Wes Moore where there was discussion on this issue. Let me know if that was helpful for you. I should say though that Hindutva is not really an issue that a lot of Western media has a great understanding of so it would make sense if it is only non-mainstream sources like The Intercept where deep coverage of this would be. Would appreciate any feedback, but I hope this is an agreeable compromise! Barbarbarty (talk) 19:19, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! My edit was just mirroring an earlier edit made by another user, and I agreed with their edit as well.
I've left a reply on the Wes Moore talk page about the Hindutva controversy. Please let me know what you think. Y2hyaXM (talk) 21:26, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I replied on the Wes Moore talk page, and to repeat what I said there here I agree with the current state of edits as of now and reserving mention for the Aruna Miller page. I am glad a resolution was reached! Barbarbarty (talk) 21:51, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Attending events with foreign dignitaries is a routine aspect of political officeholders. The presence of Senator Mark Warner and representatives from the Indian Embassy at this event underscore that. Attendance at such gatherings does not necessarily imply agreement or support of any philosophies such as Hindutva.

The whole Hindutva narrative is tenuous, as there is no explicit PAC defined promoting Hindutva initiatives that Miller is receiving donations from. Of the donors mentioned in a series of articles, it was noted they contributed a multitude of candidates in the state during the same election. The donors ties to Hindustva are tenuous at best (as some may subscribe to Hinduism) if they exist at all. Many of cited donors are Sikhs and Muslim, again contributing as individuals not as organized as a PAC with a specific cause. Additionally, while there are multiple articles on alleged ties, they have repeatedly relied on same individual sources raising concerns about the diversity and reliability of the information presented.talk

@MoCoMdDem Makes sense to me — I've just gone ahead and reverted my earlier edit. But I don't feel that it's appropriate to remove the entire section, though, as multiple different articles describing Miller's alleged ties to Hindutva and the accusations have clearly been potent enough for the Moore campaign to create a whole webpage respond to them. I also don't see how these donors having made contributions to dozens of other political candidates is a valid reason to remove the section, especially when the primary topic of The Intercept article is Hindutva-linked individuals making their way into American politics. Would you remove the section about Clarence Thomas failing to disclose his ties to Harlan Crow just because he's donated to other Republican politicians? Tom Hutchinson wiki page

Hi! I made some edits to Tom Hutchinson's wiki page before creating an account and you understandably reverted them as there was no source. Just for future reference (as I have an account now), I'm actually his daughter lol. I can track down sources for things like my parents' divorce and his birthday if you'd like. Beefnellington (talk) 20:34, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Beefnellington! We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. I put some helpful information on your talk page that explains more.
If you're able to find any reliable sources for his birthday and divorce, please let me know here, as per WP:COI it is better for you not to edit the page.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or go to The Teahouse! Y2hyaXM (talk) 20:55, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I was looking into starting an article on Jessica Fitzwater. Even after her election as county executive, I am not sure she quite clears WP:POLITICIAN. Do you have any thoughts? TJMSmith (talk) 02:11, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure she would pass WP:POLITICIAN, especially given that someone tried to make a page for her predecessor, Jan Gardner, a few years ago (before my time) and that was eventually deleted after a very, very lengthy AfD discussion. And unlike Marc Elrich and Angela Alsobrooks, Fitzwater isn't a county executive of a notably large county, either -- it's half the size of Anne Arundel County and editors have had a hard time getting a page for Steuart Pittman in the past, too. Y2hyaXM (talk) 02:26, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This confirms what I was thinking after a WP:BEFORE. Great point about Pittman. Thanks! TJMSmith (talk) 20:19, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Electoral history sections

I'm guessing that for "Electoral history" sections that you are copying and pasting from something for the table elements. I've noticed that whatever it is, you've got a extra space at the end of "Maryland State Board of Elections ", as seen here. -- Pemilligan (talk) 16:52, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I actually wrote a small Python script to automatically generate those election boxes, and just adjusted my code to remove the extra space. Thanks for letting me know! Y2hyaXM (talk) 17:01, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MD 2024 Senate endorsements

Hi - I've noticed that some of the endorsements on the MD 2024 Senate race page are out of date, but I am a not a skilled enough Wikipedia editor to add them. Would you possibly be able to do so? Thank you!

See the endorsements in question here:

- https://www.instagram.com/p/Cv93W3-tPEU/?hl=en Mdpoli2024 (talk) 15:45, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:ENDORSE, none of these would qualify as notable endorsements. A few editors have tried to add these in the past, but they were removed for this reason. Y2hyaXM (talk) 15:49, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Would they not even qualify for a listing of "four PG County officials" like the "6 state delegates" under the Trone section? Mdpoli2024 (talk) 15:52, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, because state legislators are notable per WP:NPOL. Municipal officials are only notable if they meet WP:GNG, which those officials do not. Y2hyaXM (talk) 15:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gabriel Acevero

Hello,

You reverted a photo of Gabriel Acevero noting that the revised photo was not in the public domain. The photo is from the Maryland government, specifically the General Assembly, thus it is a government photo, which automatically makes it public domain. Please do not change it, as the other photo is a crop of a photo, and thus a lesser quality photo. Gabriel Spiro (talk) 18:40, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide some support for your claim that it is a government photo, which automatically makes it public domain? I can't help noticing that it was deleted twice from Wikimedia Commons because its copyright status was unclear. -- Pemilligan (talk) 21:30, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, please refer to the link i provided from the Government of Maryland. Gabriel Spiro (talk) 01:48, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No one is questioning the source of the image. What is being questioned is your claim that an image from the state government is automatically in the public domain. Can you prove that? -- Pemilligan (talk) 02:02, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just did a quick search of the Maryland General Assembly website and couldn’t find anything to suggest they’re in the public domain. @Gabriel Spiro Please respond before this Saturday if you find anything on the mgaleg website saying otherwise. Y2hyaXM (talk) 12:46, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to an email from the Manager of Reference Services at the Maryland Department of Legislative Services Library;"They should be in the public domain. I requested clarification from our graphics department, but I haven’t heard back just yet. However, material on our website is public information." I have not heard back from them at this point. I don't know what more I can do to prove that that the image is in the public domain given that it was produced by the State of Maryland. Gabriel Spiro (talk) 23:45, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gabriel Spiro Please log this email in commons:Commons:OTRS and add the {{subst:PP}} template to the image's page on Wikimedia Commons. This is so Wikimedia can verify that this email is legitimate and the image can be freely used on Wikipedia. Please also change out the copyright license used on the page with {{PD-author|Maryland Department of Legislative Services}}.
@Pemilligan I've found a higher resolution version of the image Gabriel uploaded on the delegate's Instagram page. Once the email is reviewed by VRT agents, do you think it'd be possible to update the image with this version, since images from the Maryland General Assembly website are public domain per this email response? Y2hyaXM (talk) 00:11, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would wait for the clarification the manager said he's seeking. I'd like something stronger than should be in the public domain. -- Pemilligan (talk) 00:36, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Striking out my instructions. Y2hyaXM (talk) 00:38, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gabriel Spiro, any update from the DLS? Y2hyaXM (talk) 21:21, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gabriel Spiro Hello? Y2hyaXM (talk) 18:23, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No activity on this discussion within two weeks. I'm reverting back to the previous image and nominating the new one for deletion. Y2hyaXM (talk) 02:56, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gabriel Spiro Please respond to Pemilligan's question before this Sunday or I'll revert back to the image I added to the page and nominate the image you uploaded for deletion (again). Y2hyaXM (talk) 13:24, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the message I posted, I linked directly to the State of Maryland webpage which owns the image, I don't know what further proof is needed that it is a image in the public domain given that it is the offical image released by the Goverment of Maryland. Autopatrolled granted

Hi Y2hyaXM, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 14:39, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Y2hyaXM I would highly recommend submitting this to DYK, and would recommend a hook like "...Roy McGrath self-published a book under a pseudonym while on the run from the FBI?" Or something similar. This is such a bizarre story, people should know! Pinging you because you have only 7 days to claim the DYK. Mokadoshi (talk) 02:49, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good call, thanks! I just tried submitting one and it gave me and error, so I had to do it manually - hopefully I did it right! Y2hyaXM (talk) 03:00, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I was wrong. The guidelines say that you are ineligible for a second DYK if a previous DYK was on the front page in the last five years. Since your previous DYK was in May 2023, that would be too recent. Also, an article is ineligible for DYK if it appeared in the ITK section in the last year, and since this article was ITK on 5 April 2023, that would also disqualify it. Sorry for the trouble. It looks like you already reverted your change, which should clean up everything. Mokadoshi (talk) 03:18, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's unfortunate, but thanks for letting me know Y2hyaXM (talk) 03:20, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

April 2024

Hey

I saw you recently reverted an edit. I was having trouble with the formatting. I know this is sourced from a tweet, and I have reviewed the endorsement guidelines. However, if you look at Max Cohen’s profile, you will see that he is an independent journalist whose work has frequently been published. I think therefore this meets the requirements and I’d encourage you to revisit his profile to verify as well. Thanks!

@Jacksonjoffe18 I understand that the tweet is from a journalist, but I've seen other endorsements listed on that page and cited to that person removed by other editors. I'm certain that the endorsement will be reported on by an independent news website soon (perhaps even Punchbowl?) and then we can re-add it; but for now, we'll just have to wait. Thank you for the work you have done editing and improving a number of pages related to the Maryland General Assembly. The photo you uploaded for Delegate Jones is not her official photo located on the Maryland General Assembly. As with many other office holders, it is common they are represented by their official photo. I have attempted to make this edit in the past but evidently I do not know what I am doing, but I tried! The MGA page is linked here. Thank you for your help! JPaper97 (talk) 17:29, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JPaper97 Hello! Images from the MGA website are not in the public domain and cannot be used on Wikipedia. If you can get written permission from the Department of Legislative Services to use the image, please complete these steps. Y2hyaXM (talk) 17:44, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article Johnny Olszewski (politician) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. Incumbent vs. non-incumbent

Re your edit of Colin Allred with the summary 'non-incumbent' in this context applies to U.S. senators running for re-election", an incumbent is "the current holder of an office or position". Concurrently, a non-incumbent is one who does not hold that office. In the 2024 United States Senate election in Texas, Ted Cruz is the incumbent and Colin Allred is not.

The Category:Candidates in the 2024 United States Senate elections parameters read "This category only includes non-incumbents and candidates who did not win election" (my emphasis). Therefore, Allred can be correctly placed in this category unless or until he wins the general election. —  AjaxSmack  13:10, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that the category is meant for candidates past tense. For example, the Category:Candidates in the 2024 United States House of Representatives elections category was created multiple times before I recreated it a few weeks ago to include candidates that've lost their primaries — before, it contained candidates that were actively running for these seats, which led other editors to clear out its contents and clarify who should be in the category. Their explanation was the same as the explanation I included in reverting your edit to Allred's page. Y2hyaXM (talk) 13:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, but the parameter should then be "This category only includes candidates who did not win election" or "This category only includes non-incumbents who did not win election" as the case may be. Though I created Category:Candidates in the 2024 United States Senate elections, I copied the wording from the other Category:United States Senate candidates by year categories. As that wording currently stands, the category could include anyone who is not already in the office. AjaxSmack  01:41, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Maryland Child Victims Act

On 5 July 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Maryland Child Victims Act, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Maryland state delegate C. T. Wilson compared negotiating with the Catholic Church on the Maryland Child Victims Act to making "a deal with the devil"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Maryland Child Victims Act. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Maryland Child Victims Act), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recent Revisions

Would you please stop changing Senator Hershey's personal information. He is not married. The State bio page is currently incorrect and a revision was requested there as well. Senrevisons (talk) 19:37, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If Hershey and his wife are currently separated, then her name should still be mentioned on the page, but it should make clear that they are no longer together. I'll go ahead and do this.
Also, if you are Senator Hershey or are closely affiliated with him, I'd strongly recommend you review Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline. Y2hyaXM (talk) 19:42, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Senrevisons The edit I've just done to the page makes clear that he's no longer married to his ex-wife. Why are you still removing it? If there's an article backing up the claim that they were once married, as is cited, it shouldn't be removed! Y2hyaXM (talk) 20:23, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add a bit about Johnny Mautz. I am a VRT agent in communication with him. He is divorced, not separated, and can provide the court order. Please don't restore the "separated" label to the sidebar. If you object to "divorced" because a source is currently not available online, then it's best to remove that parameter from the infobox altogether, because claiming "separated" is a WP:BLP violation. ~Anachronist (talk) 05:43, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know, I‘ll go ahead and adjust Hershey's page accordingly then Y2hyaXM (talk) 11:23, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I don't know anything about Hershey, however. But it's probably safe to assume if not married, then divorced. ~Anachronist (talk) 14:40, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Polling

What is the point of having a separate page in the first place? Very few races have them and they have almost the exact same information. NathanBru (talk) 22:02, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paging @BottleOfChocolateMilk, who created 2024 Maryland's 6th congressional district election in the first place. Bottle, you may also want to see the discussion Nathan's started here for additional context. Y2hyaXM (talk) 22:22, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BottleOfChocolateMilk Pinging again just in case you didn't see this the first time Y2hyaXM (talk) 13:38, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MrBlueDroidTech Please see the discussion here—I removed the polls you added to the page because they're already on 2024 Maryland's 6th congressional district election, the main page for the MD-06 election. As I mentioned in my previous edit, the whole point of the spinoff page is so there's less stuff clogging up the main page, such as polling and endorsements. Y2hyaXM (talk) 21:08, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok all anger issues aside, that is literally the only page I’ve seen for an independent House race so far.
I don’t think it’s logical to accommodate one segment, considering all the other House races have primary polling AND fundraising data, including some for MD-06. MrBlueDroidTech (talk) 21:11, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not to mention, one segment isn’t gonna take up THAT much space, and a completely different page with the apparent purpose of “saving space” defeats its own point IMO. MrBlueDroidTech (talk) 21:12, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what makes you think I'm angry about anything. I'm genuinely just explaining why I removed the polls you added to the page.
There's a few other independent House pages for the elections in some of California's more competitive districts (i.e., CA-45, CA-47) and they don't have polls or fundraising tables on the 2024 United States House of Representatives elections in California page either. When the MD-06 page was created, endorsement boxes weren't automatically collapsed and the two debates tables took up most of the section. Combined with the fact that there were over fifteen candidates running for the seat, you can see how having all of that on one page could take up a lot of room. I'm not the original creator of the independent MD-06 page (that'd be BottleOfChocolateMilk), but I can understand why the independent page exists. Y2hyaXM (talk) 21:21, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That was me who was angry, I was just annoyed MrBlueDroidTech (talk) 14:52, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's to save space on the main page. Especially for a House race like this one that has a lot of content. BottleOfChocolateMilk (talk) 14:37, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah but does it save time? If I was some random dude who went to a page to look up polls, only for them to not be there and I have to go to another page and scroll ALL the way down to the polls, I wouldn’t be too happy. MrBlueDroidTech (talk) 14:54, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Map updates

Hi there. I saw your messages about updating election maps. I'll try and get to them asap. I'm doing the Presidential maps first, then I'll do the downballot races and then the ballot measures. I should have everything done by the end of the weekend and will work on fixing the maps once new data is available. ZackCarns (talk) 19:46, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know! The data in Maryland isn't all out yet, but I expect the numbers that are out now to pretty closely match the final result. Y2hyaXM (talk) 19:47, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'm expecting that I'll have to touch up on some maps, but getting them out with what will be the final result for most of them is what I want to do. ZackCarns (talk) 19:49, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just a heads up: Trump has fallen below 50% in Talbot County, MD, so the presidential map will need to be updated again. But there's apparently enough mail-in ballots remaining that Harris could flip the county, so you might just want to wait until the county's fully reported to update it again. Y2hyaXM (talk) 01:23, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll update it now and if it needs to be updated again, I can do it then. ZackCarns (talk) 01:25, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, thanks! Y2hyaXM (talk) 01:25, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like Harris's margin in Frederick County is above 50% now as well, so that will need to be updated as well. Thanks again Y2hyaXM (talk) 01:35, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done ZackCarns (talk) 01:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ZackCarns Still waiting on finalized numbers from Prince George's County and Baltimore City, but if I had to guess we're waiting on such a small amount of votes that it won't affect any of the final percentage margins in each if you wanna go ahead and push the final update for each of the Maryland maps. At most, the ballots remaining in Prince George's County cause Alsobrooks to go from 79.97% to above 80%. Thanks again for your help! Y2hyaXM (talk) 02:54, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Harris is at 86 in PG I think and 85 in Baltimore, so I agree, I would say that Harris won't go much higher or lower if at all in either county, especially since Obama didn't do that well in either area. If anything with the map changes, I or someone else can always fix it to reflect the results. ZackCarns (talk) 02:59, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When I try to overwrite the Senate results map, I get a "File overwriting not allowed" error. Something about me not having sufficient permissions to overwrite the file, which confuses me, since I was able to do this previously during the 2022 elections. Do you know if there's any way to fix this? Y2hyaXM (talk) 03:03, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a user rights issue on your end. You have to have specific user rights to be able to overwrite files. You must not have that right and are therefore unable to overwrite files that weren't originally published by you. If it is a file that you published originally though, I believe that you can overwrite even if you don't have that specific right. ZackCarns (talk) 03:16, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although, you can always apply to receive the user rights that allow you to overwrite files. I would have to look at your exact statistics, but one thing that you have going for you is the large amount of images you have uploaded, which is a plus in getting the role in question. ZackCarns (talk) 03:17, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please let me know how, I'll do so ASAP Y2hyaXM (talk) 03:19, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You will want to go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Requests_for_rights#Autopatrol. I would state why you would like the role and use the statistics of your time as an editor to try and get accepted. Here is the link to your statistics page that can help you there: https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec/commons.wikimedia/Y2hyaXM. Good luck! ZackCarns (talk) 03:25, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
