Fair use rationale for File:ApikorosSleuth-bookcover.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:ApikorosSleuth-bookcover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file's description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:46, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up! I was a novice Wikipedian when I uploaded this file, and was not aware of this requirement. I've gone ahead and added fair-use rationale for the article Robert Majzels, and removed the notice. Cheers. --Ori.livneh (talk) 22:48, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Peirce png file
Can you change that new Charles Sanders Peirce png file, which you produced and inserted, to a jpg? The jpg that was there was, in its 200px form, around 18KB. The new png in its 200px form is around 64KB. The Tetrast (talk) 20:53, 12 May 2010 (UTC).

Translation wanted
Dear Ori-livneh, I would like you to have a look at the article about the Alois Kottmann Award as we are looking for a Hebrew translation of it. The article actually is also available in German (original), French, Japanese, and Swedish. You'll find these links on the left. If you need any further informations don't hesitate to contact me. Many thanks in advance. ArcCan (talk) 15:38, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm finding all API calls - maybe all HTTP requests - to be extremely slow, as if it's timing out on some cache. Ori hi.
you replaced in hewiki some calls to $.escapeRE() with mw.RegExp.escape(). however, there is no "mw.RegExp" object (so it does not have an "escape()" member function). moreover, mw:ResourceLoader/Modules does not mention a RegExp module, and it does not mention that $.escapeRE is deprecated or is a candidate for deprecation. what gives?

Hi,
Thanks for trying to fix this gadget and the two other variants. Unfortunately, some new problems appeared with the new version. It raises an exception "ReferenceError: addSpecialCharsetHTML is not defined". The addSpecialCharsetHTML function is defined in fr:MediaWiki:Common.js/edit.js, loaded from fr:MediaWiki:Common.js. I don't know how this can be fixed, would you have any idea?
For now, I disabled the three gadgets in fr:MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, because they seems to break the entire javascript environment of users who have enabled them.

An update from the Sustainability Initiative
Hi, Ori Livneh! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
What's new?
We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)
What's next?
Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
Please help!
Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:
- Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
- Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
- Improve and translate the project page on Meta.
If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey und Gnom, 2 April 2017 —Preceding undated comment added 21:32, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

Non-existent category
Hi Atdt
Please can you fix User:Atdt/popups.js, so that it no longer get categorises in the non-existent Category:Foo?
It's become a fixture in Special:WantedCategories, which should be capable of being cleared.
I think that the problem is caused by line 7014: // eg [[category:foo]] and [[Category:Foo]] are equivalent
Unlinking those two should fix it.
BTW, Category:Foo is a recent addition to Special:WantedCategories, but I notice that the page has not been edited for pages. So I presume that the mediawiki software has changed how it handles comments in javascript. So not your fault at all, but it'd be great if you could fix it.

chessbrowser
hi.
sorry for the blunt words (elsewhere). i saw you are improving the extension, and i should thank you.
here is my opinion:
my suggestion is to keep all the functionality of the viewer (the js piece), maybe even extend it. see, e.g., my prototype (the basis of the viewer in the extension) here: mw:User:קיפודנחש/test (there's instruction to load the viewer code), which adds arrows and marks the "from" and "to" squares of the last ply, so when looking at a static board, the reader has some idea about the last move. of course you would want at most one of the two (arrow or square marks), and maybe none - the demo page shows both, just to demo "everything".
so my view is that it's better to teach the viewer to do "everything", and let sites decide what to use. i assume there can be some config file to control what would show on any site by default, and defaults should be overridable via attributes to the <pgn> tag. i can think of quite a few configuration options, such as pointing to a local page containing the CSS instead of the one that comes out of the box, and others (maybe even overriding templates and such), which will allow "skinning", for non-wikimedia sites.
specifically for buttons, something like
{
"buttons": ["start", "retreat", "autoplay", "advance", "finish", "flip"]
}
can easily control which buttons are visible by default. we can then discuss what is the preferred set of buttons for wikipedia, or wikibooks or what not, without crippling the extension and removing features that some sites may find useful.
as far as i can see, the extension does not support any config or attributes ATM. i never dealt with extensions, and can't say for sure, but i assume there is some standard way to deal with site configuration and tag attributes overrides, and i think adding configurability is a better way to deal with "the display is too cluttered".
peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 05:50, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kipod: hi, and no worries — I appreciated your feedback! I also want to thank you for co-authoring this extension. I think it's a fantastic improvement over static images of chess boards.
- I am not an expert chess player, nor am I an expert Wikipedian (the latter not for lack of trying :)). I do have experience with the software lifecycle of MediaWiki extensions, though, and it's from this vantage-point that I say the following:
- Making the extension's features configurable at this early stage could impede its further development, because every subsequent modification will have to be compatible with (and crucially: tested against) each possible permutation of the extension's settings. Complexity ramps up surprisingly quickly this way, and bugs multiply. It is a chronic problem in the MediaWiki extension ecosystem. For this reason, I suggest deferring configurability until the extension matures.
- We have to keep our eyes on the prize. Without a sponsor team at the Wikimedia Foundation committing to its ongoing maintenance, this extension's path to production is still blocked. A compact extension implementing a minimal set of useful features faces much better odds of graduating to production and getting widely deployed. A customizable, feature-rich extension can languish in the review queue forever.
- With respect to the toolbar specifically, simplifying it is my preferred option; keeping it as is, my second favorite; and making it configurable, my least favorite, at least at this stage. ATDT (talk) 09:02, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- BTW, wikis will already be able to override the extension's appearance via
!important
CSS attributes in Common.css. ATDT (talk) 09:21, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- BTW, wikis will already be able to override the extension's appearance via
Actually, using "important" in common.css is suboptimal, and templatestyles is the preferred way. Regarding "minimal useful" vs. feature rich", this makes sense, but it pertains to adding stuff, not removing. The whole "configurability" thing came from talks with wikipedians on ruwiki, who asked for different behavior, which i supported via configuration. קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 14:55, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Ooops - on mobile now, w fat fingers. Didnt mean to "publish" yet. Will try to continue and expand once i get to a keyboard...
Peace קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 14:58, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kipod: I think the point is getting lost here. I don't doubt that the auto-play feature is useful to some people. The issue I have is that it makes the toolbar crowded and confusing, which is not something (AFAICT) you have responded to directly. Maybe the solution is to delegate it (and other advanced features) to a hamburger menu.
- I'm kind of done squabbling about it, though. It's been gratifying and fun to contribute to this extension and to help nudge it toward wider deployment. (I think we'll get it enabled on the Beta Cluster this week.) I don't want to burn myself out by bike-shedding about this feature any further. ATDT (talk) 07:40, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
I understand that. This is why i keep bringing up the "flip", which you left in place: if there's only room for 5 buttons, autoplay comes before flip. Most sites i saw have both, but קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 13:55, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Again, the d@#$& thing published on its own... Was saying that most sites have both, but _all_ have autoplay, while only most have flip...
You made a fair point regarding mobile, which i agree with, so i modified the standalone behavior to hide speed controls and flip on mobile (easy peasy via css).
Peace. קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 14:00, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

pinged you from Wugapodes talk page, and just now realized i did not sign, so the ping failed (i guess i got used to some talk interfaces which add sig automatically). The question has to do with ChessBrowser status.
a while ago there was some discussion, and sort-of-kind-of consensus to manage communication over phab. however, this does not seem to work - i made several comments, and created several tasks a while ago, and did not see any response.
are you still interested? if so, please see my comments. also, please look at the beta site. specifically, notice several issues, which can be seen on your test page:
- file and row legends are not aligned correctly. please see [1], which uses templatestyles to correct alignments issues (also replacing faster/slower button icons with more universal ones, "inspired" by my lawn mower). i suggest merging the css into the extension, or find a better way to do it
- games with result 1/2-1/2 fail parsing. so do games with embedded comments. please see [2] - the PGNs there were copied from some "test cases" in the extension's test ([3]).
if you are no longer interested in this extension, let me know, and i'll stop bothering you. peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 20:26, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- @קיפודנחש and Wugapodes: I'm sorry I haven't been responsive. I'm still eager to work on this, but I've had a lot to juggle (off-wiki) over the past couple of months. Things should settle down over the next few weeks and then I'll pick this back up. Your bug reports will be very useful. ATDT (talk) 04:45, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the update!
Peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 05:21, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- I'll look into these this weekend, especially the parsing failure. I'll post updates on the phab tasks. — Wug·a·po·des 02:10, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
