Security

Are are you writing on the security related pages? I have seen that some people have lists of "these pages are my most important contributions". I really like such pages, gives a feel for the user's efforts into wikipedia, makes a "user" more into a "person" so to speak :-)

--Blaufish 20:07, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I should describe my topics of interest on my user page ... but I am not really a topic editor, I just use wikipedia, read articles and correct things when I feel I can ... Anyway I am not a security expert ... but trying stuff once in a while and reading bugtraq when I have time ;-) Syced 14:25, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adobe Acrobat

Hi Gscshoyru. You just reverted my edit on Adobe Acrobat giving "useless and misplaced" as a reason. Useless ? Knowing how a software has been developed is really important, it is like knowing how the Taj Mahal has been built, concrete or stone. Misplaced ? There are 3 sections in the article: header, history, criticism. The latter two sections can not be considered, I am left with the header, because I don't want to create an entire new section for just this simple sentence. I guess you will agree on the second point, but you will need to elaborate on the first one. Cheers, Syced 17:12, 19 July 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Yeah... Um... not sure what I was thinking. Not useless. Is misplaced though... there's probably a better spot that the summary, since it really doesn't belong there. But I was being stupid... Gscshoyru 17:19, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Single editor

I think that this list is a very useful idea! I've moved it to a public place so that other people can e.g. strike the articles they've fixed, and added it to our "cleanup" list. >Radiant< 12:09, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great :-) Sorry I could not find the"public place" and "cleanup list" pages you mention, would you be kind enough to post the links ? Thanks a lot ! Syced 13:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ASE and CAT:CLN. By the way I'd suggest making subpages for the list, perhaps one per letter, since it appears to be getting pretty long. >Radiant< 14:31, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The single user list seems like a great idea but it currently empty, just thought I'd let you know. Mustardscuffle (talk) 04:11, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

REPLY: WP:ASE checklist

Hello, You previously comment about the Articles written by a single editor page. By the way, thanks! I really thought it needed some good redesigns :) And it looks like the page is active again! At first, I had no clue what the purpose for the project page was. So I designed the checklist for wikipedians:) More will be added soon. If you want, you can add the typos idea you mentioned (or anything else you think it needs). If you want me to post your suggestions, just let me know.

Thanks, ZooFari 00:38, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks ! Let's have a collaborative work on this, we will probably refine the guidelines after using them for a while :) Syced (talk) 16:22, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These single-editor page directories, for which you have my highest praise for composing a program to write, are a little out of date. Just clicking on a few of the first links will show that many have multiple edits going back to mid-2007. I will try to get the groovy code to work for me, but if I cannot by December, (or if you'd like to do so before then), can you update the page? Thanks! -Monk of the highest order(t) 07:30, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Monk of the highest order, thanks for your involvement ! Indeed, the list have been generated a while ago, and needs to be updated. It would be great if you could launch the generation, for two reasons: First to update the list; but more importantly to make the project more sustainable: long-living projects are not those who in the hands of a single person, but those mastered by several people. I can help you master the Groovy scripts, don't hesitate to ask if you need anything :-) You may want to create a subpage of [WP:ASE] to share your experience and potential difficulties with running the generation script. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Syced/Wikipedia Reference Search, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Syced/Wikipedia Reference Search is a test page.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Syced/Wikipedia Reference Search, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Neural network

"The web application will collect the user's choice and use it to train a neural network." What will be the final result of this training? What will an editor do with it? How will it improve Wikipedia? What do you really mean by this? Yours, GeorgeLouis (talk) 15:17, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The trained neural network is a mathematical function that takes an article's metrics and output a number. This number is an estimate of how much this article might interest the user who trained the neural network. Applied on all articles, it would give a list of the Wikipedia articles this user most likely want to edit. Thus the user would check (and potentially edit) articles he really feels like editing, and probably does a better job at it. It is just theory, nothing has been implemented yet, and the result would probably be far from perfect. Syced (talk) 15:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, this sounds promising, but isn't there something like this already? I remember getting a message about a year ago concerning "Articles that might interest you." GeorgeLouis (talk) 20:05, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, I actually used it myself, its name is User:SuggestBot. SuggestBot mostly uses a user's edit history, whereas the program I described uses mostly the user's reaction to each suggested article, trying to refine the suggestions over time based on whether the user edited the suggested article or not. Also, SuggestBot tries to find topics that will interest the user (like industry-related chemicals, 12th century travels, etc) which is quite difficult to do. The program I described would not be able to understand topics, instead focusing on articles metrics, for instance it could guess that a particular user will want to edit an article that has had an edit-war a year ago and contributions from only one author since then. It can be thought of as WP:ASE with an adaptive algorithm, rather than the well-defined rules ASE has right now. By the way, we could eventually take the algorithm that adapted well to a given user, check whether it also works for other users, and if it works better than ASE's default algorithm, we would override ASE's algorithm with this adapted one. Per your request you are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. 7  05:56, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:42, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

no evidence of notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekta Samaj requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello, Syced. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Huawei STREAM X GL07S, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  2. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekta Samaj requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.satp.org/satporgtp/countries/india/terroristoutfits/ABNES.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Allwiki

Hi, I saw the description on your userpage, and wondered if you had seen WP:ALLWIKI? It was tried very early on, but was generally found to be too overwhelming, even for editors/readers that like an info-deluge! Every time I see it brought up, I recommend that the editor create a test/demonstration page, by copying an existing article, and then linking every single possible wikilink, to see how overwhelming it would be. (ideally, start with a recent FA, eg John Barrymore).

A few other problems with allwiki are:

  • the vast increase in rendered page size. (Compare the page-size that gets downloaded, before and after converting to Allwiki. All that extra code adds up fast.)
  • The way it would prevent researchers from mapping out topics that are connected to each other (which our current deliberately editor-decided selection of links, greatly assists with)
  • for automated linking, it would be very complex to resolve conflicts, or to deduce context (e.g. here, it says "executive branch", and is referring to a specific government, but an automatically added link would go to executive branch, which is just a general overview).

Just a random bypasser's thoughts. Hope that helps. :) Quiddity (talk) 21:26, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Acronym or portmanteau?

The book "20th Century Words" (Ayto, Oxford University Press, 1999) states that yuppie is an acronym. Please source any edits you have to the contrary.

Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Syced,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Yama—Attack to Attack, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hakata. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Articles by a single editor

Hi. Is the WP:Articles written by a single editor project inactive? It's been 11 months since I mentioned that the list was down to a single link. It's been empty since early February. Would you please generate a new list, or change the project page to reflect that it's inactive and add it to Category:Inactive project pages? Thanks. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 21:57, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BlackcurrantTea! Thanks for caring! I am too busy on Wikidata to maintain that project, would you be interested in taking over? You just need to run the script once in a while. Cheers! Syced (talk) 07:11, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I fear I'm not qualified. I looked at the code formerly on your ASE Source code page (asespotter.groovy & asespotter2011.groovy), and understood just enough to know that I don't know enough. I'll likely find some of the ASEs with the orphans I work on, so they won't be entirely neglected. Thanks for all your past work on this! BlackcurrantTea (talk) 09:27, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List is empty. Cheers! bd2412 T 11:30, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) BD2412, please see the section immediately above this one. Syced, I added a note on the listing page that it was inactive, removed it from the Active Wiki Fixup Projects & MiniAWFP templates, and added it to the inactive list on Template talk:Active Wiki Fixup Projects. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 07:43, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BlackcurrantTea, BD2412, guess what, I am generated a new list right now :-) Since this project seems to be getting a bit of interest, I figured out it is worth maintaining. I will upload it tomorrow. Thanks for your patience! Cheers! :-) Syced (talk) 08:00, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, as you know a few days ago I expressed doubt whether this tool should be trumpeted at the Help page. It does seem like a good start on a valuable tool and I'm glad to see improvements not deletion. Carry on! NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:47, 5 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Newslinger: Thanks for your encouragement! The search engine really needs involvement from people who are passionate about reliability, and I am too busy on Wikidata and Commons to follow closely enough what happens at WP:RS. Cheers! :-) Syced (talk) 12:52, 5 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Syced, thanks for clarifying that you'll be maintaining WP:WRS. At first, I was a bit shocked to see NNDB on the list, but I understand that many editors don't necessarily read the reliable sources noticeboard on a regular basis. Since you've removed the questionable domains mentioned in my comment from the TSV file, everything looks good to me. In the future, I plan to condense the information from WP:RSP, WP:A/S, and WP:VG/S into a machine-readable format, and I'll be happy to supply updated TSVs for WP:WRS.

By the way, do you mind if I add the {{WikiProject Reliability}} banner on User talk:Syced/Wikipedia Reference Search? (If you're interested in WikiProject Reliability, you're certainly welcome to join.) — Newslinger talk 11:04, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited On-premises software, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Alfresco (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Notice

The article Hoox has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-Notable software.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Articles written by a single editor/Articles list

Hello there! I was scrolling through the list of Wikiprojects, when I came across the list of articles written by a single editor. The sole contents of the page were a list of guidelines, and text saying to notify you if the list was empty. Seeing as it is, would you mind running the script? Thanks in advance, Opalzukor (talk) 12:50, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip! The parsing is currently broken, possibly because of some format change serverside.
