Non-free rationale for File:Triplets.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Triplets.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — JJMC89(T·C) 16:43, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Palmyra Atoll flag

You recently removed the link to File:Flag of Palmyra Atoll (local).svg from the Palmyra Atoll article's infobox, saying that its being "made by some GIs" rendered it inappropriate for WP. While a similar flag was originally designed by American GIs, the included source says that The Nature Conservancy made several modifications before approving it. Will you reconsider inclusion of the atoll steward's version of the flag? —ADavidB 13:32, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you complete all the steps after posting Trebek. Stephen 22:25, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That all looks good thanks. Hope to see you posting more as there's often a backlog to post and never enough admins. Recent deaths don't have to have any measure of notability, as the existence of an article is enough. This rule puts an end to arguments of whether a person was worthy enough to be on the main page. All we look for is a solid, verifiable BLP, with citations in every paragraph and references for all their work. Thanks again. Stephen 23:04, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request: Aztec sun stone

Already read the sentence. The only change I would make is: "chisel(l)ing" instead of "carving," so as not to repeat ("carving" and "carved")... but I recommend to look for a native English speaker (I am a certified English-Spanish-English translator, yes, but my mother tongue is Spanish, not English; besides, I am not a historian, but a psychologist): perhaps s/he would know better the deep sense of "chisel", "carve", and "sculpt". Thanks a lot for turning to me! Hope you and all your family's health is ok! Regards from Mexico City (CDMX). Correogsk or Gustavo (Editrocito o Heme aquí) 02:42, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish Parliament

Hey Lexicon,

What program did you use to generate the diagram for the Scottish Parliament? I tried to wrangle Photoshop, but it was horribly inefficient and the colors never matched the official party colors.

By the way, the reason I uploaded the screenshot from Your Scottish Parliament("my version") under a new name was because I saw a Commons page (I now can't find) that said something like 'if the change is major don't upload a new version/make a new filename'. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Lower case names

Hi Lexicon, thank you for your tireless contributions to Wikipedia. Please be aware that, although common games like backgammon are spelt in lower case in the press and general literature, sources on tables games frequently capitalise the names of games and especially the less well known ones. This aids clarity and avoids confusion. Also, while there has been a general transition towards lower case in North America, that is not necessarily the situation elsewhere in the English speaking world. So currently neither should be preferred or deprecated. So I'd be really grateful if you'd undo your recent lower case edits to tables games articles. Many thanks for your understanding. Bermicourt (talk) 13:12, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your point of view. In some cases, not a single WP:RELIABLE SOURCE has the name in lower case, so Wikipedia is breaking new ground here. I've read the guidance, but it's written by a couple of North American editors who are zealous about imposing their regional preferences on the rest of the world. Wikipedia is meant to reflect the real world not create its own version of it. So I guess we'll have to agree to differ. Bermicourt (talk) 08:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've been on Wikipedia a long time and I've also studied the literature in this area. The overriding rule on Wikipedia is WP:RELIABLE SOURCES, not the average English reader's level of knowledge. I've also researched trends on lower case and there are dozen of articles out there which have noticed that over the last few decades American English has become much more informal, including decapitalising words and titles. If you're immersed in that culture, you of course wouldn't notice this. The reports also make clear that, although this trend is starting elsewhere, it is nowhere near as advanced. So just as with WP:ENGVAR, where the sources vary, we should not mandate a particular solution and mass delete all other options. There are good reasons why game researchers and writers, even North American ones, often use title case - for clarity. Many of the names are the same or similar to those of contracts, bonuses, equipment or other game features. Anyway, we clearly aren't going to agree, so let's draw a line under this, move on and concentrate on improving the sum of human knowledge. Bermicourt (talk) 15:03, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We're not going to convince one another, you've made the changes you want and you're an admin, so I'm unlikely to get them reverted. Please let's not prolong this fruitless discussion. Bermicourt (talk) 16:09, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
