WikiCup 2024 August newsletter
The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:
- Generalissima (submissions) with 1,150 points, mostly from 3 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 7 good articles, and 13 did you know nominations;
- Arconning (submissions) with 791 points, mostly from 2 featured lists, 8 good articles, 4 did you know nominations, and plenty of reviews;

- BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 714 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Susanna Hoffs, 2 featured lists, and 3 good articles.
Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated. Contestants put in extraordinary amounts of effort during this round, and their scores can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 36 featured articles, 55 featured lists, 15 good articles, 93 in the news credits, and at least 333 did you know credits. They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.
If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please see this page. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Mounttriviama (21:03, 25 August 2024)
Hi. I just signed up today to make a start on updating my home town page (Sucina) as it's littered with grammatical and factual errors. Someone (person or bot?) reverted the first group of corrections shortly after I had saved them. I have tried asking the other editor why they would do that but no reply yet. Does it have to be this frustrating? I can understand why so many errors exist on WP when this happens. --Mounttriviama (talk) 21:03, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
- I just heard back. They say they reverted my edit because they felt they "weren't constructive". I was correcting factual errors AND one huge grammatical error - how can that not be constructive? Mounttriviama (talk) 04:49, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

I see the bot finished up the NFL Draft task a while back. Thanks for that. Dicklyon (talk) 00:17, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
If I recall correctly, we didn't propose to fix links to NFL Draft itself for some reason. Would you like to go back and get approval to do so? There are around a thousand, per this search. Also quite a few National Football League Draft. They could certainly be handled by AWB if around round of bot approval is a hassle. Dicklyon (talk) 15:57, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
I just noticed this diff] in which a "main" link was not replaced. Is this a clue to a wider problem? Dicklyon (talk) 17:28, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

- @Dicklyon: Hey! Glad it seems to have worked out well in general. For the generic "NFL Draft" task, someone with AWB access might be better suited rather than going through bot approval again. Not sure on the 1973 draft edit you linked—going to just cross my fingers and hope it's not a bigger problem! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 18:00, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- It looks like we failed to anticipate the template redirects Template:Main article and Template:Details. Maybe it would be easy to get permission to finish those off? I agree it would be easy with JWB, but I haven't found anyone with JWB that's particularly helpful. Dicklyon (talk) 23:33, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

- Hey there. Please see H:REFB and WP:AUTO. "Citing yourself" as a source is not acceptable here, and since absolutely nothing in that draft is supported by reliable sources, the article is not suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 13:49, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

- Please also see WP:BACKWARD. You shouldn't be trying to find sources to support the info already there, but rather you should probably delete everything (yes, everything) and start again, writing only what reliable sources say. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 14:31, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Discussion phase
The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 22–24 - Discussion phase
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–? - Scrutineering phase
During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.
On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Source request
Hey! You say on a user page that you can help find sources and I need help with that. I write about 90s hip hop music. Some of it was reviewed by popular publications available through WP:TWL, and if not, there were reviews in specialized magazines, with The Source being the most popular at the time. A lot of its reviews are available online. However, for some strange reason, finding reviews from 1999 onward is nearly impossible.
One of the issues I'm looking for is The Source April 1999 issue #115. If I read this page correctly, it's available in your library. I need the "Record Report" review section, pages 195–223, though half of them will be ads which I don't need. As for which articles I need it for: it should contain the review of Chyna Doll, which currently has a citation needed tag instead, along with the reviews of Don't Be Saprize and Changing the Game (both currently have a single AllMusic review doing the heavy lifting). There is a small chance it has the review of Soundbombing II that I'm looking for as I plan to GA it eventually, but it's more likely it was in May or June issue. Thank you in advance! AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 13:50, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- @AstonishingTunesAdmirer: I've sent you the Record Report from April 1999 by email (minus the full-page ads). I also checked the May edition for Soundbombing II but didn't see it, and I don't have a copy of the June edition for whatever reason. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:04, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's amazing! Thank you so much! There are, of course, other issues I'm looking for (such as October and December ones, as I can only find small bits of their reviews online), but I wouldn't want to burden you with requests. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 15:24, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- It's no burden at all! You've seen the catalog—what's available to me is available to you. I'll hunt down the Record Report from October and December 1999, any others? Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:34, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Well, a few other I was curious about (June and August) are unavailable. I already have January, November, and now April, with March hopefully coming soon. In February they skipped reviews, as far as I'm aware. So that leaves May (I have the first 4 pages, though according to table of contents there should be a review of a Slum Village album, which I assume is Fantastic, Vol. 2), July, September, October and December. I managed to find some bits of them online, but of course full scans would help greatly in expanding relevant articles. Thank you so much for doing this! - Words can't describe how grateful I am. I previously tried getting access to these through random people on the internet who mentioned that they have them, and responses ranged from ignoring me completely to telling that they're in a box in an attic and that they'll help me next time they go there (probably never). So it would be an understatement to say that I'm ecstatic to finally have this resolved. Thank you very much! AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 19:33, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

- It's weird. Usually I can figure out the abbreviations, as this kind of jargon ususally refers to authorities. Question from Shelly Smiith (08:39, 3 November 2024)
how do i make my own article, i heard i need to submit it but im not sure how to submit it --Shelly Smiith (talk) 08:39, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Shelly Smiith: Hey there! I'm actually going to point you toward my essay on why you shouldn't start an article just yet. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a decent amount of experience, and you should try to build up your skills before trying this. I know this isn't quite the answer you wanted to hear, but I hope it's one that helps you grow as a contributor to this great project. Happy editing, and reach out with whatever other questions you may have! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 16:34, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Beyond high-quality writing, there are many policies, guidelines, and procedures you're likely unfamiliar with, and the best way to learn is through experience. Orphaned non-free image File:National Technical Honor Society logo.png
Thanks for uploading File:National Technical Honor Society logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

DYK for Allison Reese
On 7 November 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Allison Reese, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Allison Reese has received millions of views for her impressions of Kamala Harris? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Allison Reese. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Allison Reese), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your opinion on images
Just had a quick question about the Classic Images source you sent me. What do you think the copyright status is of the images in the publication? I would think they're not copyrighted to the source itself, but I'm also not seeing anything attributing the images to someone else. I'm wondering if at least some of them are public domain. SilverserenC 00:46, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Silver seren: Unfortunately, unless something explicitly indicates otherwise, we generally assume all images are copyrighted. I don't see anything for these that would suggest they're in the public domain. However, once your draft is live, unless you can find a freely-licensed image of Eve, you could probably justify using a low-quality version of one of these images as fair use under our non-free content policy. (Since she is dead, it is now impossible to take a new, freely-licensed photo.) I recommend reading through that policy, and you can likely use
{{Non-free use rationale biog}}
. Let me know if this all makes sense! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 03:50, 8 November 2024 (UTC)- It does, thanks. I've done that with a fair number of biographies, I was just hoping there would be a free option among these. It is interesting that the publication doesn't give any form of attribution for all the different photos. I guess there's little risk of them being sued at this point though. Hello, explain to me in simple terms how to make templates please.
I just want to know.Spongebob796 (talk) 01:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Spongebob796: That really depends on what you're trying to accomplish—could you elaborate a bit more? A template is generally just a special tag that gets replaced with some wiki code written with the same syntax as anywhere else you'd edit here. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 01:18, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

Hello! Thanks for requesting the book! I've expanded the Tomassa article and added the image. I went through the table of contents and at least thirty are not currently on en:WP! I will try to at least add them to Wikidata. At your leisure, could you send portions on Sippia Paul Hull, Mildred Cleghorn, Wah-Pah-Ho-Ko, and Aunt Minerva? I'll try to edit those as time permits. Question from ExaEthereumgold (10:34, 17 November 2024)
Hello, my name is Terrence, and I want to add a article, information page on my company, corporations Eethg Corps PhD, and Eethg Corps Inc Phd - however I do most of my work on my mobile phone, and writing articles is a lot different than emails , I am asking the best way to correctly do with click on links, and it update yearly. I got links on bing and Google, but all the major big leagues got "Articles" on Wikipedia --ExaEthereumgold (talk) 10:34, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @ExaEthereumgold: I know this isn't the answer you want to hear, but please don't make an article about your own company. There are so many problems associated with doing so that we have a help page detailing them all, "An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing," which I advise you to read. Question from PolarRailfan7068 (00:50, 15 November 2024)
Dear Mentor, I have a brief inquiry. If an individual were to substitute an image with another that is a drawing created by a different artist, and that individual possesses the necessary permissions and is aware of the copyright implications, is it possible for the new image to lack any associated files, given that it is a drawing? --PolarRailfan7068 (talk) 00:50, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- @PolarRailfan7068: Hey there! You raise a really vague question, and I'm hesitant to give you a definite answer, especially with copyright issues involved. Can you be a bit more specific? Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:09, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, what I'm asking if any image has to have a file. Like, I want to replace this image on the Titanic page. specifically The image with the side view of the ship with this one from a website called Ocean liner Designs. [1] But I want to know from the person who did the drawing if I can use a image of the drawing to replace the current image. I already sent a Email asking him last week but he hasn't responded yet. What i'm trying to say if I can use an image of a drawing but don't show files since it's a drawing. If I sound stupid I'm sorry. PolarRailfan7068 (talk) 21:43, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- @PolarRailfan7068: I don't think this idea will work out. First of all, we don't really make a distinction between "images" and "files," so I'm not sure what you're asking there. But also, I'm pretty confident in saying we won't get permission to use that drawing. The website has it watermarked and is making a significant profit from the sales—I cannot envision them freely licensing the image for anyone to use, which Wikipedia requires. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 04:45, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, Thanks for letting me know sorry if this was a mess. I just started a account and I'm only 13 so sorry so I have no idea how copy right works. PolarRailfan7068 (talk) 22:27, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- @PolarRailfan7068: No problem at all! I just advise that you don't play around too much with images until you're more familiar with the rules and laws around them. Happy editing Bsoyka (t • c • g) 22:48, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

I'm going to point you toward WP:BFDI for information on why, but the main reason is the show doesn't meet our notability requirements. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 23:51, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Good day mentor please check my sandbox if there is any corrections to be made on the new page article --Ntekops (talk) 15:15, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

RS or not?
Hi. I'm wondering if Miraheze and Reddit are reliable sources. I don't mean sourcing one thing said from the website like this:
"...is a weird company[2]"
Like this. It is acknowledged that it is just an opinion of the users on the site; For example:
"...Users on Miraheze, particularly(wiki this)and(wiki that)have critized the company as weird.[2]
Thanks and bye. Spongebob796 (talk) 08:21, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
I even made a topic on a question named RS or not?. You have not replied. Answer please.Spongebob796 (talk) 13:21, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Spongebob796: Hello. You asked your question on a national holiday in the United States, and I was spending time with my family. Practically every single editor on this site is a volunteer, and there is no deadline, so patience is always appreciated. Regarding your original question, those are unreliable sources, and I wouldn't include statements like that. Your or I could personally visit a Miraheze wiki or Reddit right now and call a company weird—there's no reason for Wikipedia to use any information from such sources. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:57, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Intotheweeds: Hey there! I have a feeling what you mean is, "I want to create an article about my non-profit organization," and I'm going to advise you to steer clear of that idea. Having a Wikipedia article about your company isn't always a good thing, for a variety of reasons. If I'm wrong and you're not connected with this organization, I will point you toward my essay on why you shouldn't start an article in general just yet.
