Gilsanz Murray Steficek is a structural engineering and building envelope consulting firm based in New York City.

The partnership of Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP (GMS) was formed in 1991 by Ramon Gilsanz, Philip Murray and Gary Steficek, who have worked together as structural engineers since 1986. Their combined experience totals more than 120 years, during which time they have designed and managed many high profile projects. Firm name changed in 2015 to Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP Engineers and Architects. Gilsanz Murray Steficek Inc. was created in 2004 as a “VIE”, Variable Interest Entity of Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP Engineers and Architects to practice in the state of California. Since late in 2021, Limited Liability Partnerships are allowed to practice in California, so GMS Inc. is being phased out.

In 1999, Joseph Blanchfield, Partner, joined the team bringing a new dimension to the practice: building envelope design consulting. This effort dovetailed very well with the traditional structural engineering disciplines of the firm. Since Joseph Blanchfield’s retirement in March of 2020, the building envelope team is led by Partners Achim Hermes and Susanne Mackiw. Together they continue to service projects of different scales, within different markets, adding to the extensive building envelope portfolio created to date. The building envelope work undertaken by the firm includes the design of new facades, roofs and waterproofing systems, and the restoration of existing facades, roofs and waterproofing systems.

In 2003, GMS opened their first branch office in South Orange, New Jersey. This office, as been located in Newark, Elmwoood Park and now Bloomfield, NJ. In 2004, GMS opened their second branch office in downtown Los Angeles, CA. In 2005 GMS-NY moved from 95 University Place to the current location at 129 West 27th Street, NY, NY. In 2012 GMS registered with the NYC Department of Building as a Special Inspection Agency #000240. In 2021, the Connecticut branch opened in Stamford, CT. In 2022, single desk in Boston MA, within the architectural office of Bergmeyer. In May 2022, Dan Eschenasy joined the team to focus on Forensic Engineering.

Among GMS’ extensive portfolio are award-winning tall office and residential towers, theaters, housing, healthcare, educational buildings, sports facilities, retail stores, transportation projects, sculptures, landmarks, and special structures located across the country and abroad.

GMS has helped to draft codes and standards to improve the resilience of buildings and infrastructure across the country, even before New York City adopted its first seismic code provisions. The USRC rating system will help the public better understand the choices that we, as a society, make and help improve building performance in the future.
