Z (born 8 February 1996) is an American tattoo artist, grunge punk guitarist, and social media personality. He is known for his work in blackout tattooing and scarification. He has been the subject of controversy over the extreme body modifications he performs.
Biography
Born on 8 February 1996 in Boston, Massachusetts, Z grew up in the Boston area, and started going by his chosen mononym at the age of twelve.[1] He has described his family environment in interviews as "fine"[2] and "not the worst."[3] He attended Bunker Hill Community College, receiving an associate's degree in 2016.[4]
Z has dated both men and women,[5][6] describing himself variously as gay[1] or bisexual.[7] In 2018, a number of media sources reported that he was in a relationship with Michael Fassbender,[8][9][10] but both men denied the claim, calling it "an inexplicable rumor" (Fassbender)[8] and "flattering but not, you know, true" (Z).[5]
Career
Following a childhood interest in body modification,[2] Z received his first tattoo at the age of 13 from an older boyfriend.[7] He practiced stick-and-poke tattooing on himself and friends for two years,[11] before buying his first tattoo gun with money allegedly obtained from an illegal source.[12] As an adult, he apprenticed under Leo Zulueta, whom he has described as a role model and inspiration.[2] After three years of study under Zulueta,[1] Z opened his own tattoo studio, Nothing Doing Tattoos.[11]
In addition to tattoos and piercings, Z has performed body modifications including tongue splitting, lingual frenectomy,[13] scarification,[1] and ear shaping.[14] He drew controversy in 2021 after performing a voluntary arm amputation for a Canadian man, who traveled to California for the operation.[15][16]
