.tk is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Tokelau.
Tokelau gives most domain names under .tk away to anyone for free. Free domains are pointed to Tokelau nameservers, which redirect HTTP traffic via HTML frames to a specified web page, and redirects 5 email addresses to external addresses. Because of this use of redirection, use of free .tk domains for other services (such as hosting servers for other protocols such as FTP and IRC, or creating hostnames and subdomains within them) is not officially possible, however with the use of a PHP script it is possible to have subdomains on a free domain.
Despite Dot TK stating on their website that "optional advertisement on your website"... "can be"... "removed FOR FREE" many users of Dot TK are unable to remove the advertisements. [1] Furthermore the reliability and accuracy of the Traffic Check service is questionable. As the server tries to guess your location from your IP address, you (living in country A) may be suggested to reside in country B (cannot be changed) while the pages are presented in language C. In addition every access to a free site first shows an advertisement before the redirect to the registered site takes place. Sites not visited at least 25 times in 90 days are automatically cancelled, and you cannot have more than three.
To be able to use one's own nameservers, or get a "special" .tk domain name, for example, trademark domain names for most Fortune 500 companies, and to avoid advertisements, the user must buy it. Paid domain names start at $6.95 per year.
Some internet service providers, such as Road Runner, block .tk domain sites.
