Wikipedia:JSTOR/Nav

JSTOR is one of the largest and most reputable journal archives in the world. This page is to facilitate signups for a pilot collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation and JSTOR. This pilot provides free access to JSTOR's complete archive to 100 500 active editors for one year, in order to better support the most active and experienced authors of the encyclopedia. Active through December 2015. See blog post.

The content set currently available to the Wikipedia editors includes all of JSTOR's archival journal collections (now about ~2,000 journals) and the 19th Century British Pamphlets collection (26,000 pamphlets), but the books (~20,000) and the current journals (more recent issues for ~300 titles) are not available in the Wikipedia pilot. TWL is working with JSTOR to potentially expand the package available to editors.

Note that around a hundred universities provide free alumni access – please check if this applies to you!

To get access

  1. You will need to be an active editor. If you haven't been particularly active lately, preference may be given to another request.
  2. You will need to have a confirmed email address, and be willing to provide this address to someone from the Foundation and to JSTOR (unlike Wikipedia, JSTOR access requires email). The Interior is the current contact.
  3. You will need to sign up here, with access given out in the order of signups. Please sign up even if the 500 person limit has been reached, so that overall interest can be measured and we can get a waitlist started. Before you post a request, please check on this page to see whether you already have access through your local public library and/or educational institution.

Please be aware

  • If you are given access but fail to register an account within a reasonable time, you may be asked to relinquish it to another requester.
  • There is no minimum usage requirement, but if you're not really using your account and you're willing to give it to another person on the list, please let the Foundation contact know.
  • You will need to abide by the JSTOR Terms of Service, and should be comfortable with the fine print in the JSTOR Privacy Policy.

Requirements

  • You do not have free online access to these JSTOR products through your local library or university
  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of six months old
  • You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
  • You are active in content generation, research, and/or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

Expectations

Approved editors may
  • Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
  • Electronically save portions of restricted content
  • Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
  • Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the JSTOR website they are accessing
Approved editors will not
  • Share their account logins or passwords with others
  • Mass scrape or mass download JSTOR content
  • Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
  • Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
  • Use the access provided through the Pilot for any commercial purpose
Private and confidential information
  • You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. You understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia Library, and JSTOR. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or JSTOR), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a JSTOR article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free JSTOR pages
  • Editors should credit JSTOR and denote the registration requirement by adding |registration=yes and |via=[[JSTOR]] parameters to {{cite}} or {{citation}} templates as appropriate, or by using the standalone template, {{Subscription required|via=[[JSTOR]]}}

  1. Aspro (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Active since 2006. I have a broad range of interests, so get frustrated at the number of times a google scholar search leads me to JSTOR and I can't read the whole paper to see if it makes a suitable WP reference. Too many editors rely on just the text available in the Abstract or first page - which is bad practice. Approved

  2. OR drohowa (talk) 20:30, 9 February 2015 (UTC) Hi! I already signed up for JSTOR access, and had it for a while, but now when I login to JSTOR, I have 'limited access' and am only able to see abstracts/ article listings but not full text! Is there an expiration period on our accounts and/or what is the renewal process? Thanks![reply]
Hi OR drohowa, do you recall about when it was that you signed up for JSTOR? Juno (talk) 08:50, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  3. Arr4 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) - I usually edit in the articles of history, literature, politics and biography in English and Bengali wiki. It would be very helpful for me If I get access to the journal. My university does not give access to the alumni and none of the public library located near my house do not have access to JSTOR. - Arr4 (talk) 15:22, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Kiyoweap (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) - Active since September 2009. About 2500 edits on en, 1400 on ja. I focus on mythology & folklore of various cultures, and engage in a lot of fact-checking. I have subsisted on public domain resources and snippets, but would be helped by search and article access on JSTOR beyond "3 article" limit.--Kiyoweap (talk) 07:34, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  6. Jefferyseow (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I specialise in 19th Century British Malaya. Sources are hard to come by. Access to JSTOR would make work easier. I've been on Wikipedia since 15th April 2006. On Wikipedia I have made over 1,962 edits, written 87 entries, significantly contributed to 12. I've created 10 pages on Wikisource and uploaded at least two files to Commons.

I don't have any institutional access to the JSTOR, so this possibility could certainly be very helpful to me regarding my future work on Wikipedia (globally). Thanks! 12. Mr. Pseudo (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I'm mostly active in the sq.wiki (Albanian), with 3500+ edits. Furthermore, lately, I became an admin on sq.wiki. I have broad areas of interest. (In real life) I have in depth knowledge in the biomedical field (I prefer not to be too specific), despite not doing a lot of edits in this field in the wiki projects. I have translated different articles on the subject of politics, economy, and philosophy from the en.wiki... I'm also doing a sort of clean up process on the sq.wiki...- there is a lack of sources, especially on articles about Albanian history (or better to say, how the world has seen and sees Albania, and Albanian related matters.). Moreover I think that this would be a further reason to continue working on wiki projects. --Mr.Pseudo Don't talk to me 21:45, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently looking into accessing primary and secondary sources (Spanish, Mexican & American (Philippine-American War to World War II) colonial period records, journals, newspapers & publications (as well as Mexican ones) 1600s-1940s), but physical access to these are difficult from the Philippines. -Object404 (talk) 15:52, 11 May 2015 (UTC) Edit: No JSTOR alumni access at my university. -Object404 (talk) 23:10, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  22. Jpbrenna (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I contribute to Wikipedia in a number of categories, especially in the history of Argos and the Argolid and recently, Greek and Roman women writers. I have started a stub article on Melinno, and I have cited the publicly available portion of a JSTOR article on her work, but I would like access to the full article for further citation. Additionally, I have noticed that many other articles on Greek and Roman writers, men and women, rely to much on shallow popular histories and could benefit from the citation of scholarly sources. This is especially important in cases of disputed authorship, where in order to avoid No original research, we need to present scholarly arguments for and against a particular attribution. It would provide me with a vast array of sources with which I could add content to articles; it would really enable me to expand the scale of my content. The ability to add scholarly content is so important on Wikipedia, and is especially helpful in contentious areas that need impartial analysis. As other editors have noted, it's very frustrating not to be able to view JSTOR articles in full. Thanks for your consideration. GeneralizationsAreBad

  36. Biblioworm (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I plan to use JSTOR access to do research for articles concerning Medieval Europe (England, in particular) that I intend to work on. I have already seen several articles on JSTOR that could be useful for content creation/improvement, so I feel that having direct access would be much more convenient than continually requesting individual access to the article. I have made 7.5k edits, and am the author of two GAs and eight DYKs. Although I'm not fully active at the moment, I should return to normal activity levels in the near future, and I could still use my access to start obtaining materials for articles that I wish to improve. I carefully looked through all the available TWL resources, and I determined that the three for which I have applied (JSTOR, Questia, and OUP) will be the most useful. 6. Imeriki al-Shimoni (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) - I edit within various topics, but I am most interested in contributing in topics related to ANE history and archæology. I use to have some access to journal articles in the past, but it required me filling out a list of several requests, sending it off, and waiting for a long period (months) before the articles would be sent. This made it difficult to focus on any edits, additions, or verifications. I have — since then — focused more on minor corrections and bringing up questions on Talk pages, instead, since waiting for access to articles took too long. Easier access would make it easier to make more of the edits and additions I was previously interested in doing. Laodah (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) You'll see from my edit history that I'm a little bit everywhere, all the time, on WP; in theory I'm a grammar gnome, but my extensive article sweeps, together with my own use of WP, mean that I end up doing a lot of fact-checking and adjusting, particularly in history and social science articles. I have no access to JSTOR through my local library; such access would make it possible for me to do more textual edits than at present, by cutting down the time required to verify and cite. Thanks for the consideration. Laodah 22:28, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  44. daqu (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I've been editing for close to 10 years, above all mathematics articles (I'm a Ph.D. research mathematician without a current affiliation), but many other topics as well. I have greatly benefited from having access to JSTOR via institutional affiliation up through June 2013, but I currently have no access through any source. JSTOR access now would be a tremendous boon for editing WIkipedia articles as well as for conducting my own mathematics research.Daqu (talk) 23:31, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  45. Ле Лой (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I’m a prolific Russian Wikipedia user, authoring more than 500 articles and celebrating my 8th Wikipedia cakeday next month. I am mostly interested in linguistics and anthropology, but often make contributions to random articles. I’ve used JSTOR before, but the paywall prevents me from reading/writing more. — Le Loi 03:15, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  46. Lawrencekhoo (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I recently moved from one educational institution to another, and am in the office a lot more than before. I hope to use the time to improve some of the more dismal articles under the auspices of the Economics wikiproject. Unfortunately, my new educational institution does not provide access to JSTOR articles. Having access to journal articles would be a great help to my improving various Economics articles. Thanks! 47. KJRehberg (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am a frequent copyeditor and fact checker for as many Wikipedia articles as I can get my hands on. Having access to JSTOR would be a great resource to correct and cite even more articles, including those I have written myself. Thank you. KJRehberg (talk) 04:00, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  48. Zezen (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been editing wiki articles since 2010 (and also before, as an IP contributor). I specialize in social history of Central Europe. A number of my edits require sourcing through archival newspaper content, unavailable in archive.org, etc. , so I had to give up on expanding the created or modified articles for the lack of verifiable refs, alas. 49. Alekksandr (talk · contribs) My first edit was in July 2008 and my edit count is over 6000. My interests include Irish history (in particular judicial offices), UK and Irish political history (in particular elections and office-holders), royalty and anything else that tickles my interest (;-) Alekksandr (talk) 21:51, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  50. Epolk (talk · contribs) I have been an editor for a decade. Per X!'s Tools I have over 17,000 edits, around 14,000 on unique pages. As the number of articles on Wikipedia have reached a critical mass, I have moved from creating and proofreading articles to creating citations for articles. The publicly available sources for searching scholarly works usually point to an abstract for an article or a pay site (e.g. JSTOR) so my ability to provide accurate and complete citations are limited. As for my areas of interest, they tend toward history and the sciences, especially zoology as this area seems to be most in need of expansion and citation of sources. 55. ClemRutter (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email). I have delayed applying until it was absolutley necessary- but now the time has come. I am a London based content creator, working on follow ups to edit-a-thons, on cotton mills in Lancashire, sundials listed buildings etc., basically doing academic work and some training. I have been around seriously since 2007 created 816 pages and done 2OOO edits this year- and over on commons you will find 8500 of my images. This is the season for checking references. Thanks. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 12:03, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  56. JmCor (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email). I have been using JSTOR for about two years, under their "Shelf" system, which is limited to a maximum of three items at a time. I am mostly interested in the history of science and would use JSTOR to access articles in that area. JmCor (talk) 17:56, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  59. MrPenguin20 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Mostly work on areas relating to politics and history, with a specific focus on Britain & the Arab world. That being said, my range is extremely broad. Whilst I previously enjoyed access through my university, the program doesn't extend to alumni. Academic sources naturally often provide information which can't be accessed freely elsewhere. Many thanks. MrPenguin20 (talk) 00:56, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  62. Hgilbert (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I've been editing for 10 years, in which time I've accumulated more than 16,000 edits. 63. LeftAire (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I've been editing since 2011, among my main articles are Ornithology and Historical related articles. I've requested access through OUP, but I'm thinking that I may also need full access to JSTOR; my university unfortunately doesn't have full access, especially for some of the Latin-American related articles I can potentially use.
