Vildmarksvägen (English: wilderness road), sometimes also called the Stekenjokkvägen often only used by people living in Stekenjokk which crossed the Vildmarksvägen, is a tourist road which goes between northern Jämtland and southern Lapland.[1] Vildmarksvägen goes through Strömsund and to Klimpfjäll. Part of the road is closed during winter at times because of heavy snow which can reach seven meters.[2] In 2012 the Frostvikens Fjällpark was open in Gäddede as part of the Vildmarksvägen.
The road
Vildmarksvägen goes through Strömsund to Gäddede to Road 342 then through Jormvattnet and Stora Blåsjön and Stekkenjokk and on to Klimpfjäll.[3] From there it goes on to Kultsjön and Saxnäs via Stalon and lake Moalgomaj on to Vilhelmina.[3] Parts of the road through Kalfjället is closed at times during winter because of heavy snow.[4] When crossing Vildmarksvägen in Strömsund, people cross an area heaving the greatest concentration of bears in Sweden.[2]
Because of its altitude, mosquitoes and gnats do not exist in the region.[5]
In 2012 the Frostvikens Fjällpark was open in Gäddede as part of the Vildmarksvägen.[2] Vildmarksvägen also hosts the Bjurälven nature reserve.[2]
