Sophie Morgan (born 1984) become a parapalegic as a result of a car accident in 2003 and uses a wheelchair.[1][2]
Background
Morgan was born and raised in Crowborough, East Sussex, and attended Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland, an exclusive private school that has educated many members of the Royal Family. On 17 August 2003, she was driving friends back from a party in Elgin when she suffered an accident which resulted in a fractured skull, broken bones, and a spinal cord injury which resulted in her being paralysed from the chest down.[3] Originally planning to study law, she switched to fine art after her accident,[2] and attended Goldsmiths, University of London from 2008 - 2010. She completed an Open University degree in English Literature, then studied for a Masters in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy at the Institute for Arts in Education and Therapy. She currently lives in Hove.[3]
Career
Reality TV contestant
Morgan is best known as a Reality TV show contestant by being one of the few people to appear in two different Reality TV shows about disability. 18 months after becoming a parapalegic, she became part of the BBC’s series Beyond Boundaries when she travelled through Nicaraguain jungles for a month with ten other disabled people.[4] In 2008 she joined with 7 other disabled women on Britain's Missing Top Model where the prize was a fashion shoot for Marie Claire magazine.[5]Morgan was the runner-up,[6] and went on to model in a tracksuit for Stella McCartney. Carolyne Underwood, who appeared in 2010 in Dancing on Wheels and in 2012 on The Undateables (2012), is the other disabled woman who has appeared in two reality shows.
Other disability-related work
Morgan has since designed the 'Mannequal', a symbolic fiberglass faux wheelchair for use by store mannequins to integrate images of wheelchair users into fashion displays.[7][8]
Morgan has also appeared in Horizon for BBC2,[9] and The One Show for BBC1, and has assisted in promoting SEAT, a programme to help disabled youths learn to drive.[10][11]
In 2012, Morgan was one of the presenters for Channel 4 during the Paralympics, where she presented the weather report each morning.[12] She wrote an article for the Sports section of The Independent about the Paralympics[13]that was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor/[14]
