I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)
- pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)
I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)
OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)
- all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
- EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
You been doing any more with those NASA Facts papers? Sorta curious as I havent heard anything in a while. ALKIVAR™ 01:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
- yes, I have taken a break on that, I'm working on getting a faster scanner, but I will definitely follow through on the whole pile. I'm really busy these days so faster is really gooder... gotta run, let me know when you get back from your break. Pedant 02:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
A quick note to say thanks

Nice work, and thanks

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.
Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation
Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Wikipedia is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Signature
Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See [[WP:~~~~]]. r3m0t talk June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)
- What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
- For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :) ALKIVAR™

You have made a positive impact on Wikipedia, and I firmly believe sysop privileges would only enhance your contribution abilities. If you do not mind, I have taken it upon myself to nominate you for adminship on this hallowed occassion. Wikimania 2006
Firstly, enjoy your Wikibreak; come back clear-headed and ready to edit! Second, I noticed you live in New England, and are a DJ (awesome!), and wondered if you've heard of Wikimania 2006, which is happening right here in our fair city of Boston. I know it's a few hours' drive from where you are, but if you could participate in IRC chats, or volunteer to help with Wikimania, we'd really appreciate it. I enjoy working with you, and look forward to seeing you in the future. Happy wikibreak, Mysekurity 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Funny shit, I wish I still had one of the posters (the one with a swashbuckling floppy) that they sent out to universities during that campaign so I could up it to commons. Also, excellent work on the many aspects of warez (it's refreshing to see well written articles by people who have a clue). I have a question about the above mentioned picture. You state it was taken by Utopium Photography, yet you claim to be the copyright holder. If this picture was not taken by you, but you are the subject the photographer has to release the copyright to you. Just like wedding photos, the married couple do not hold any copyrights, or infact any rights to the photos. Mike (T C) 23:30, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- Dude... you have absolutely no idea what the hell your talking about. In the US, works for hire cannot be registered for copyright by the creator. See this pdf:
- Under the 1976 Copyright Act as amended (title 17 of the United States Code), a work is protected by copyright from the time it is created in a fixed form. In other words, when a work is written down or otherwise set into tangible form, the copyright immediately becomes the property of the author who created it. Only the author or those deriving their rights from the author can rightfully claim copyright.
- Although the general rule is that the person who creates a work is the author of that work, there is an exception to that principle: the copyright law defines a category of works called “works made for hire.” If a work is “made for hire,” the employer, and not the employee, is considered the author. The employer may be a firm, an organization, or an individual.
- Note the section in bold. Nuff said. ALKIVAR™

Paul Oakenfold
I agree that the way I worded it, it sounded like he mixed his own records. I sat there for a few minutes trying to peice together a sentence that would be both grammatically correct and convey the correct message. "Not only did Oakenfold produce records, but he also mixed them." A few too many modifiers. The words but and also are both redundant but without them the sentence is screwed. Perhaps, "Oakenfold even mixed the records he produced for others" or something of the ilk? drumguy8800 - speak? 02:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

- "Your IP address is 196.25.255.195. Please include this address, along with your username (if you are a registered user), in any queries you make."
This is getting tedious. South African users are almost without exception forced to use a transparent proxy (198.54.202.18) by the South African Internet Exchange. I can use my own colo machine to bypass this problem, but its still a PITA, and most users here do not have that privilege. SAIX is unwilling to even consider changing this situation too. Please unblock the IP, since it has been that way for (at least) 6 hours now. Thanks, dewet|™ 13:36, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

- Not quite. As I mentioned, I have access to a seperate proxy, so I *can* actually bypass it. Also, AFAICR, Wikimedia now allows you to post to talk pages, even though blocked, although I might be completely wrong on this. HOWEVER, the autoblock is still popping up, which is something I've just experienced again (along with all the thousands of other SA users forced through this proxy):

Question in (or close to) your speciality
Hello !
We are desperatly searching for the English equivalent to fr:Liver ("chip jockey", not the organ). Would you happen to know whether there is and English equivalent to this (and possibly an article on Wikipedia about it) ?
The French text says "A liver (chip jockey) is a techno or Indus music artist. By contrast to the Disc Jockey who uses vinyl discs and players, a liver uses electronic music instruments and computers to play music"
Thank you very much in any case ! Rama 21:57, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well i've never heard the term "chip jockey" before... in my personal experiences its usually referred to as a "Live PA" or "Live Performance Act". These are quite well established in the music industry. For example The Prodigy who I saw perform last night in Washington DC had 1 live drummer, 1 live guitarist, 1 DJ who also produced live with beat production machines and keyboards and 2 microphone users. I wouldnt exactly call it singing though. This would be a good example of a Live PA. Or someone like Uberzone who is another "Live PA"... I guess the closest term I could come up with for an EN link would be Performance artist. Sorry I cant come up with something better, Musician which also applies is just too broad. ALKIVAR™

Image copyright problem with Image:GPN-2000-001978b.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:GPN-2000-001978b.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Image legality questions page. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:19, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Beer cats & kittens
Hi Alkivar. It has been suggested by User:BrianSmithson that the Beer and brewery categories should be renamed. The proposal has been supported by User:Syrthiss, and supported and expanded by myself. The notion is that the regional categories should follow the format of "Beer and breweries in Africa" /Europe/Asia/North America/South America/Oceania. "Brewers and breweries" could also be renamed "Beer and breweries by region". And all the countries should also be renamed (and merged if needed) as, for example, "Beer and breweries of Germany", "Beer and breweries of Britain", "Beer and breweries of Poland". The word in each case would be beer rather than beers to allow for general articles on beer culture in each region as well as individual beers.

Re: "Chef=Moron"
Since you left this comment in your edit summary for your edit on the Isaac Hayes article, thought I'd comment on your comment. Don't be too quick to jump on the "Hayes is a hypocrite" bandwagon. Why not? Consider the very real possibility that he didn't quit South Park at all; rather, this may have been done by his "Church" of $cientology "handlers". ==ILike2BeAnonymous 23:02, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- The fact he joined a church that has "handlers" is yet more PROOF that Chef=Moron, at least in my perspective. Anyone stupid enough to join an admitted cultlike religion is a moron in my eyes (I'm sure David Gerard is reading this now and seething). ALKIVAR™
23:20, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Point taken. Don't want to extend this into too long a discussion, but consider this also: contrary to popular mythology, most people who get involved in cults and scams (which is definitely what $cientology is) are not idiots and droids; many are actually highly-intelligent people who get suckered in. My guideline is hate the practice, not the practicioner. But whatever. ==ILike2BeAnonymous 23:49, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Revert?
Why did you revert my edits to Warez without any explanation? For great justice. 23:45, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
- Uh no dude, piracy is the accepted term BY THOSE INVOLVED IN IT! "Copyright infringement" is way more POV as it asserts that they have actually 1) violated the law (not always true) and that 2) said person actually holds copyright to said work. If I were to bootleg a copy of The Smashing Pumpkins and Sony Media sues me it is not "Copyright infringement"... if The Smashing Pumpkins sue me then it is "Copyright infringement". The term Piracy has been in the article since virtually day one, and has been agreed upon by ALL viewers until you came along. Please leave the status quo alone. ALKIVAR™
00:09, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I don't think that the opinion of those involved is the only one that counts. Copyright infringement, along with 'piracy', both imply an act that is in violation of copyright holders rights,. Your speculation on copyright law is irrelevant, as is your claim that any edits that improve on the 'status quo' are unwanted. For great justice. 00:13, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Unprotecting Clay Aiken
I request that you reprotect the Clay Aiken page. A previous admin came and wanted to unprotect it, but the entire group of us involved in the dispute in the first place agreed it should remain protected.
