The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (Template:Lang-hi) (Template:Lang-te), IIT Hyderabad, IITH) is an autonomous university permanent Campus located in Kandi, Medak District, Andhra Pradesh. Presently IIT Hyderabad running in a temporary campus located at Ordinance Factory Campus(known as ODF), Yeddumailaram village, Medak District, Andhra Pradesh. IIT Hyderabad is eighth among currently fifteen Indian Institutes of Technology (including 7 old IITS,6 new IITs started in 2008 and 2 more in 2009) established by the Government of India through an Act of Parliament, to provide education and research facilities in engineering and technology. It was set up in technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan.[1]

General information

IIT Hyderabad permanent campus that occupies 550 acres (2.2 km2) that is part of the Kandhi village, Medak district. Presently The institute has nearly 60 faculty, 330 B.Tech students, 110 M.Tech students, 90 research scholars and 40 administrative and supporting staff. Growing ever since it obtained its charter from the Indian Parliament in 2008, IIT Hyderabad has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

The Institute has 10 academic departments and research centres across various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with well equipped laboratories at temporary campus.

History

IIT Hyderabad started in 2008 from a temporary campus at Ordinance Factory(ODF), Yeddumailaram village. Its permanent campus will be located at Kandi near Sangareddy and is close to the Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad). United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi on 27th Feb 2009 laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) in Andhra Pradesh's Medak district.[2]

Permanent Campus

IIT Hyderabad campus will be located at Kandhi (near to Sangareddy) to on the outskirts of Hyderabad city in a 550-acre (2.2 km2) campus. The campus located on NH-9 and it also near to Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad). It is expected that all operations will be shifted to the main campus by mid-2012. It is about 50 km from the Secunderabad Railway station.

Temporary Campus

IIT Hyderabad Temporary Campus at ODF

The temporary campus of IIT Hyderabad is located in the quiet residential campus of Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK) at Eddumailaram (Medak District, Andhra Pradesh), about 45 km from the heart of Hyderabad city. The academic blocks are newly renovated buildings of Sarath Vikas School Campus, in a walled compound of approximately 40 acres (0.16 km2). It has all the basic infrastructure to run Academic programmes. All the advanced lab equipment, playground, workshops,lecture halls are made available to the students to encourage research and development.

Engineering Departments

Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering

It is the one of the youngest department in IIT Hyderabad.

Chemical Engineering

The major objective of the Department is to impart high quality education and research. The major research areas of the Chemical Engineering department include.

The Chemical Engineering Department has access to online journal like Science Direct. Software packages like MATLAB, EDEM, ANSYS FLUENT and ASPEN plus are available with the Department in order to accelerate the research.

Civil Engineering

The major Research areas are.

  • Structural and Soil systems (Structural and Geotechnical Engineering)
  • Environmental and Hydraulic systems (Environmental Engineering and Management, Water resources)
  • Transportation systems (Transportation, Structural, Geotechnical, and Environmental Engineering)

Computer Science and Engineering

With "Global excellence and local relevance" as driving philosophy behind every activity, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of IIT Hyderabad, has resolved to contribute significantly for the application and advancement of Information Technology in India.To build a stronger base and bigger groups with complementing talents integrated, it is proposed to develop all areas and all aspects of CSE through the expertise and experience of faculty members.

Currently, this department is offering an undergraduate programme (B.Tech.), and postgraduate programmes M.Tech. and Ph.D. Several user oriented programs are planned to be in place in the next couple of years at postgraduate level, customized to the needs of the industries.

Electrical Engineering

Telecommunication Engineering and Power are the research areas in which the faculty members will be specialized.Currently, the Department of Electrical Engineering is offering an undergraduate program (B.Tech.) and post graduate (M.Tech. and Ph.D.).

Materials Science Engineering

It is a inter disciplinary department of Material and metallurgy engineering.

Mechanical Engineering

The current focus is on the globalized competitiveness and increased awareness of the environment which made the manufacturing significantly different with more emphasis on competitive technologies and management approaches.The main research areas of IIT Hyderabad mechanical engineering department are automobile engineering and manufacturing.Currently, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is offering an undergraduate program (B.Tech.) and post graduate (M.Tech. and Ph.D.).

B.Tech program

  • Admission to Undergraduate program

JEE: The Joint Entrance Examination to the IITs is conducted every year and forms the basis of admission to the undergraduate programs. It is considered an extremely competitive exam. IIT Hyderabad is having highest cut-off ranks compared to other new IITs.

IIT Hyderabad since its inception has given admission to undergraduate students in three courses, namely Computer science and engineering, Electrical engineering and Mechanical engineering.However it will be offering a new course Chemical engineering in addition to the above three for the students who clear JEE 2011.It is the first of all the new IITs to offer a fourth B.Tech course

Postgraduate academics

M.Tech program

Minimum Qualifications:B.Tech./B.E. degree or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid GATE score.
GATE: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is the entrance exam used to govern admission to graduate engineering programs at the IITs.

M.Sc program

  • Admission to M.Sc program

Minimum Qualifications:B.Sc or equivalent degree with 65% for GE/OBC, 60% for SC/ST or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid JAM score.

JAM: The Joint Admission to M.Sc. is the entrance exam used to govern admission to post graduate science programs at the IITs.

Ph.D Program

IIT Hyderabad offering Ph.D in all areas.

Other academic activities

Among all the new IITs in the country IIT Hyderabad has been making fast progress on the research side apart from providing regular B.Tech programmes.[6]

Research & Industrial Consultancy

IIT Hyderabad got lot of Project from various Industries and funding agencies. Among those 1st Research Project to address future energy needs of India. The project "Development of High-Energy Density Li-ion Batteries for Mobile Applications" entails developing state-of-the-art electrode materials for Li-ion batteries and fabricating the batteries. ARCI joins hands in embarking on an ambitious program to develop High-Energy Density Batteries.

Student activities

Elan

Elan is the annual technical cum cultural festival of IIT Hyderabad. So far, there has been three editions of Elan in 2009, 2010 and 2011 ,respectively with the latter being a greater hit, among the colleges across India. It is typically held in springs(Jan/Feb) and aims at being one of the biggest student festival in Hyderabad. It includes workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and technical exhibitions. Competitive activities cover design events, programming, simulations and modeling, quizzes, applied engineering, robotics.

Facilities

These are facilities available in (temporary campus at ODF) IIT Hyderabad: The ODF campus includes four schools (Ankur Vidhaya Mandir, ZPHS, Sarath Vikas School and Kendriya Vidyalaya), One Sai mandir, a couple of bank branches , SBH and Andhra Bank, and three SBI ATMs (One near by SBH,one at ODF Main production unit and one in institute area), a hospital, shopping centers at complex, food joints, Market(twice a week), a swimming pool, football and cricket stadiums.

Hostels have been constructed at the temporary campus for the students.They hae reasonably good faclities for the comforst of the students, which include washing machines, aqua guards (Manjera drinking water), Computer facility, Solar water heaters, TV rooms, cycle stands e.t.c. The boys hostels have been divided into blocks with the capacity of each block being 32 rooms.Each room can house 2 students.High speed internet is available via Wi-Fi in the hostel zone.

Academic zone

High speed Internet is available in the institute 24x7. IITH has a small cafeteria in its premises, named "Little Place". IIT Hyderabad having SBI bank with One SBI ATM is set up at the institute area.

Labs and workshops

Labs are well equipped and are apt to the growing need of latest technology and remains open 24x7. IIT-Hyderabad having High Computing facility with Linux and Windows severs.

Library

The IIT Hyderabad Library has a modest collection of books and is growing with every day. The Library holds about 1200 acquisitions of academic books and about 200 acquisitions of non-academic books. There are variety magazines, newspapers (Hindi, English and Telugu) and Video lectures are also available.
