He Fallschirmjäger, last week (or a bit longer ago) I posted a request at the maps workshop for a map featuring the 300 stations of the ''international monitoring system'' ([[Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Map_workshop#Stations_of_the_International_monitoring_system]]), which you may have seen. As the request is a bit complex (stations location data are in a us file, an example in another one), I think it has not been picked. I was wondering (and hoping!) if you could take a look if it is something for you (if you have the time)! Rgds! [[User:L.tak|L.tak]] ([[User talk:L.tak|talk]]) 09:39, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

FS: Could you work your magic on this image
? It is for use in "Galápagos tortoise", which is in the FA queue.

Kinda thinking whatever you can do to help it look better. Mostly getting rid of the Russian writing or just cropping that whole section of writing (either one, use judgment). Anything else to make it look clearer, although I suspect the issue is the original drawing.

TCO (talk) 20:34, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, I'll gladly work on this and see what I can do ;) Regards, Fallschirmjäger  21:48, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok matey sorry I've taken a while, its taken a fair amount of time. I got rid of the shadowing and traces of paper from the photo. I also worked from the originial file File:HMS Beagle 1832 longitudinal section.jpg as the later version had been blurred by increasing the resolution too much, so you may notice the new file is smaller but the details are much clearer. Either way the line drawing is much easier to see now, hope this is close to what you were after but if not let me know and I'll try and sort it. Regards, Fallschirmjäger  22:27, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good upgrades! I would have had no clue even what to ask for. One thing I wonder about is either cutting or maybe spreading, the numbered explanations. The issue, we always have with pics, is how long they go down the page in terms of layout. And that is a lot of blank space down there. I like blowing up the size to where the image is viewable without clicking as it is more visually pleasing and as a lot of non-wiki regulars (our readers) don't even know about the click option.TCO (talk) 22:35, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You made a good point there so I cropped away the numbered explanations and added them instead to the file description to remove that excess space. Fallschirmjäger  00:54, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question on fixing an image

Hi again. You were nice enough to have helped me several times with images in the past, and I was wondering if you might help me with another one. I uploaded this portrait, which for its age, is remarkably well preserved.[2] The only thing amiss is that the original format, when uploaded here, leaves big white patches on either side. Is there a way to remove those? Thanks in advance for any help, and for your assistance in the past as well. MarmadukePercy (talk) 20:14, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. No problem, I'll have a look into it. Regards, Fallschirmjäger  20:26, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok it should be sorted now ;) Fallschirmjäger  20:32, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Darn, you are fast! Once again, much appreciated! Best, MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:07, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Turtles of Texas

Starting another project. Think it will have one cool, kinda new twist: range maps in a table. Appreciate any help and advice. [3]

TCO (talk) 02:36, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey TCO, I'd be happy to help. For starters it shouldn't be necessary to make the TX county maps from scratch, as excellent, workable SVG's of each already exist. (see here). I can use these as a starting point and serve as a blank canvas and can add to them whatever is required. Just getting the data for all 254 counties I can see is going to be one mammoth undertaking! While things are still in the planning stage I think it would be wise to consider exactly what species of turtles we intend to map, to be thorough I think it would be best to include all, so sea turtles, land turtle, aquatic, and terrapins and I'm guessing its gonna be a rather long list as TX is a big state. But I'd be happy to help out wherever I can. Regards, Fallschirmjäger  17:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are about 30 species. It will be a bit of a work project, but I think will make the article "special". Have not seen anyone do this.

Getting the ranges (or calling them, since there will be source variation) will be on me. Maybe if we did something like numbering the counties, it would help for coordination? I am expecting a lot of species in East Texas will just be in sort of a swath there, so could just say " a line east of ...".

I'm not totally hung up on the county-level precision, but was trying to come up with a system of coordinates, so that we could be efficient. Some states (VA, ME) actually have county-level sampling, but I don't know for Texas yet. I was more thinking as a tool for us to draw. Something to make it easy for you to draw the maps once there is a system.

Agreed, the sea turtles, we can just draw as offshore (maybe out to some limit, territorial waters or "economic zone"). They do come on land to nest, but just occasionaly and only penetrating a few yards inland. Would display their range as in ocean. The diamondback terrapin is only found in the row of the couple counties closest to the ocean.

WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Poland Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Help

Hi there,

can you please help with this request, it's stale [4]. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 08:59, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply, I've been away for a few days. I have done 3 of the 5 sets of panoramas, the other 2 I was unable to do due to too much variation in perspective/angle and colouring. Yout can find them below. Regards, Fallschirmjäger  16:08, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help with an image

Hi again. You've been most helpful in the past, and I wondered if I might run something by you. I uploaded this image on Commons [5], which I found an extraordinary image (and one of several proposed Confederate flag designs I found at Beinecke). The image was subsequently fiddled with, and it hasn't worked out well (in my opinion). What I was hoping for was to have the back border removed as in this instance [6], while retaining the aged look of the original (as is the case in the diploma). Instead, the original lovely faded color of the original has been replaced by a rather modern-looking garish red. I wonder if you might have a 'go' at this? As always, many thanks! WikiCup 2011 April newsletter

Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Scotland Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.

This round saw our first good topic points this year; congratulations to Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Assyrian people Nergaal (submissions) who also led pool H and pool B respectively. However, there remain content types for which no points have yet been scored; featured sounds, featured portals and featured topics. In addition to prizes for leaderboard positions, the WikiCup awards other prizes; for instance, last year, a prize was awarded to Democratic Republic of the Congo Candlewicke (submissions) (who has been eliminated) for his work on In The News. For this reason, working on more unusual content could be even more rewarding than usual!

Sorry this newsletter is going out a little earlier than expected- there is a busy weekend coming up! A running total of claims can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
