Tamandani Wazayo Phillip "Tam" Nsaliwa (born on 28 January 1982 in Lilongwe, Malawi) is a professional soccer player currently playing as a defensive midfielder.

Club career

Early years

Nsaliwa was born in Lilongwe, Malawi and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia at age seven. He played for local sides Edmonton Drillers (indoor) and Edmonton North West United before moving to Germany.

Germany

He moved to Germany to play for Second Division outfit Nürnberg who, while he only played a minor part, won the league title to clinch promotion to the First Bundesliga. However, Nsaliwa was offloaded to Saarbrücken and carried on to play on the second level for 5 more years, including one season at Jahn Regensburg. Nsaliwa relinquished his Canadian citizenship to become a citizen of Germany (where he spent six years) in 2007 to avoid local rules limiting the number of non-EU internationals permitted in a team.[1]

Greece

In 2006, he was lured to Greek Super League side Panionios by their new German manager Ewald Lienen and enjoyed his first season of top league football. On the final day of the season he scored his second league goal against local giants AEK Athens, whom he immediately joined after that game.

Norway

In the spring of 2010, Nsaliwa signed a loan contract with the Norwegian top flight club Lillestrøm SK which will last until June 2010.[2] Nsaliwa struggled with playing time with his currently club AEK Athens. It was then decided that he should be loaned to the Norwegian premier league club Lillestrøm SK, after a trial in the pre-season.[3]

Spain

According to the official website of Real Betis, Nsaliwa not play in the club because there was no economic agreement between both parties. After this, the player decided to sue the club. This is the translation of the official notice that the club put on its website:

"Real Betis Balompié has ruled out signing Tamandani Nsaliwa after both parties have reached an agreement on economic quantities. After several days that has been in talks with the player and his representatives, club Betis midfielder ruled out the incorporation of after failing to reach a point in common. Real Betis continue to work tirelessly to continue making the template ahead of the season that begins in less than two weeks."

He current plays in SD Ponferradina from Spanish Second Division.

International career

Nsaliwa played at the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship in Argentina, alongside Julian De Guzman and Mike Klukowski among others.[4]

He made his senior his debut for Canada in an April 2001 LG Cup match against Egypt and has, by December 2009, earned a total of 13 caps, scoring no goals. He has not yet represented Canada in FIFA World Cup qualification matches but did play a game at the 2001 Confederations Cup and 3 at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Personal life

Although he represented the Canada men's national soccer team at full international level, he renounced his Canadian citizenship to become a citizen of Germany in 2007 to avoid local rules limiting the number of non-EU internationals permitted in a team.
