Opera mini editing for logged-in users?
I know Opera mini works through an open proxy, but where can I see (or start) a discussion of whether Opera mini should be unblocked for registered users? I would love to use my phone to edit Wikipedia when I'm not at a fixed internet link, but the built-in browser is too lame for words. --Slashme (talk) 14:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I would have though that Wikipedia direct would let you edit pages, but it doesn't. It would have made sense, or at least require someone to log in to edit. Ian.thomson (talk) 21:16, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

WAP/mobile browser detect?
I was glad to find this page after some diligent searching around Wikipedia for a way to use it on my Palm Treo via en.mobile.wikipedia.org (it's essentially impossible to use the default W layout) - but I wonder why I had to do so, and why it was so hard to find. Wouldn't it be reasonable to either provide an automatic or optional redirect to the mobile site when a small-format browser is identified, or automatically use a different style sheet? For that matter, I would raise the question as to just what it is about the default layout that is so pathological that the Treo's Blazer browser breaks - there are very few sites on the net that break the browser's layout algorithm as badly as Wikipedia. This seems counter-intuitive, as in general Wikipedia appears to be a very well-designed and user-friendly system. --Gar37bic (talk) 06:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- You'd probably want to bring this up on the Village Pump (technical) page. Since it'd take a software change to be more mobile-friendly, someone there could submit a bug report for the feature. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 12:59, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- For the main site, this sort of thing doesn't interact very well with our caching system -- we rely very heavily on caching to keep our costs down. If the device supports JavaScript it may be possible to do it client-side; otherwise it'd have to wait until we figure a good way to handle user-agent breakdowns in the caches to avoid fragmenting the cache a million ways. --brion (talk) 21:48, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Swedish Wikipedia at Wikipedia direct?
I request that the Swedish Wikipedia be accessible through sv.mobile.wikipedia.org. Today the Swedish Wikipedia has 299 385 articles. --Bensin (talk) 18:49, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Would it be possible also to have Italian Wikipedia available on it.mobile.wikipedia.org? We were discussing this at our "village pump". --Jaqen (talk) 09:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Currently the mobile gateway only supports languages it has a localization for (bugzilla:16693). This is in part because it does its own parsing and needs some local keywords to handle things like images correctly. Until we find a general fix for that, you can go ahead and do a translation and we can add it -- the source files are in our Subversion code repository; whip up files for your language and submit them to Bugzilla. --brion (talk) 21:51, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Differences between mobile and 'normal' access
I am looking at mobile internet as part of my job, and I have been comparing WP display on the mobile with the same on a PC. (It is also possible to see the mobile content within IE7, for example.)
A couple of things I have noticed:
- Image captions are not displayed as text. In IE7 they appear as tooltips.
- User names (on user pages) are not displayed, so embedded links such as "Hymek (talk · contribs)" are not displayed, but neither is any alternative text (so the sentence may not make sense).
Is this the page for discussing issues found with http://en.mobile.wikipedia.org ? Or what?

"View this page..." notice
Does anyone know if it's possible to turn of the suggestion to view Wikipedia on the mobile site when browsing on my iPhone? It appears at the top of every page and seems to squash the top navigation links too (although that might be a seperate issue?). Howie ☎ 18:07, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
502 Bad Gateway
The commonest error I see on the iPhone for en.m.wikipedia is the http error "502 Bad Gateway". Since those coming to m.wikipedia probably have decent browsers, could someone who has more editing knowledge than I add "See Wikipedia normal homepage" links to this error page? Normal wikipedia isn't great on smartphones but it's better than a one-way trip to 502 Bad Gateway. Maybe some of the other error pages that are likely to indicate the gateway not working (as opposed to 404 or 401 errors) could have this too. 202.154.151.204 (talk) 09:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Move to meta
soooo needs doing. nothing wikipedia-specific about this page, its just a summary of the status of mw's mobile interface status, applies to all mw-powered sites, and therefore all wm-hosted sites. either move to mw.org or meta.wm.org —Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.244.56.181 (talk) 10:57, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Indic Language support for m.wikipedia.org
Can we have support for indic languages ? --naveenpf (talk) 05:29, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Work on language variants has not started yet, but it has been requested before and it is planned. The biggest problem is how to efficiently integrate it in the mobile interfaces. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 10:32, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Some ideas that will greatly improve the mobile version of wikipedia
The mobile version of Wikipedia is very nice (I actually prefer it over the regular version) but I have some ideas to make it better
(I use wikipedia mobile on an iPhone- but I assume that it's the same on any mobile device) (Some of these might be applicable for the regular version of Wikipedia as well)
1. The ability to EDIT articles from it. (It annoys me when I'm viewing an article and I see vandalism in it and there's nothing I can do but ignore it at the time) (I've read on the front page there that this isn't possible at the moment- But I think that would be a VERY nice feature.
2. Get rid of any tags "NPOV, Citation needed," and so on.. on the mobile version. They just make it look unprofessional and specifically, the citation needed template is extremely abused and overused (literally, i've seen an article where every sentence finished with a CN tag, or basic facts such as "Greg was born in San Diego" with CN tags among them- I'd suggest just getting rid of the tag on wikipedia completely but the idea would get rejected by a bunch of idiots.) If there is no intention for the mobile version to have editing in it, then the CN tag especially should not be viewed in the mobile version, since it's mainly a tool for editors- and means just about nothing to the casual reader- other then to imply doubt about a presented fact. Since all the tags are tools for editors (at least that's what they are supposed to be) they shouldn't be on a streamlined mobile version, if editing is not included. (possibly have an options to display the tags or not- it increases readability and makes it look more professional)
3. Categories should be viewable at the bottom of each page.
4. in regular wikipedia, External Links appear differently than Interwiki links. In Mobile version, I can't tell the difference between the two.
5. Red interwiki Links should have an option to be viewed as just regular black text.
6. The references column (and all numbered references throughout the article) should either have an option to be toggled off or just be removed from mobile version because[15] It can be kind of[16] annoying when you are trying to read a long article [17]. additionally, the references columns normally aren't readable on the mobile site due to long URL's
7. If I click on a wikipedia article, it loads the regular website for about 10 seconds, then toggles to the mobile version- wasting 10 seconds.. not sure if that's a technical thing that can be fixed or if it has to be like that.
8. basically, a panel to configure how you view articles on the mobile version could remove some of my complaints and get it so people could have it how they want to view it.
I don't know if there actually is a display preferences for the mobile version, but if there is, I can't find it.
Please respond on point by case. RF23 (talk) 04:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- If I may add my own suggestion, it would be some sort of conditional construct (does it already exist?) so that when I'm authoring content, I can specify different formatting for a mobile device. As I described on the Talk:C shell page, I've used blockquoting on some lists of features, where the lists were long and each item needed description. It works well on a laptop or desktop to let you see them as lists but it looks silly on my Droid. I wish I could fix that. Msnicki (talk) 19:48, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi! After the latest redesign of Wikipedia, interlanguage box expands via javascript and as a result it can't be expanded in Opera Mini. I had not that problem with old wikipedia design. Mobile wikipedia (m.wikipedia.org) doesn't offer interlanguage box for articles. I know it's possible to register and turn on the old design, but some users don't prefer to register, and in some cases loggin into account is unsafe. My request is to disable js for interlanguage box because it's very useful especially during mobile browsing... --94.27.92.188 (talk) 05:16, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
