Shock is a famous musical which is very popular in Japan. Producer of the show is Johnny Kitagawa, head of the talent agency Johnny & Associates (a.k.a. Johnny's Jimusho). In charge of the production is Domoto Koichi, member of the well-known J-Pop duo KinKi Kids. Starting out in the year 2000, SHOCK has been performed annually ever since and as of March 2009 it has been on stage for 10 years in a row. Due to the enormous success, in 2010 the number of shows was stocked up. After the first row in February and March shows in July have been added.[1] On March 21st 2010 the cast celebrated the 700th performance.[2]
SHOCK has been adapted and re-scripted several times since it started out. Name and cast variations never did anything to lessen the popularity of the show. While the basic story is always the same, the character story lines change with the cast. All versions have been performed at the Imperial Garden Theater in Tokyo.
Main story
A group of actor friends works together in order to produce its own show. However, they are rather poor and not exactly very famous, so they have to perform in the small “off-broadway” theatre. One day, though, they get amazingly good critics and the chance to produce a show for the big “on-broadway” theatre. Everybody is very excited. But how will things turn out for the group? What shades will the big spot light of the “on-broadway” theatre cast on the various characters? And what will happen to the “off-broadway” stage after the group leaves?
