Apostolos Giannou, known in Australia as Paul Giannou (born 25 January 1990) in Naousa, Greece is an Australian-Greek Footballer who currently plays for the Greek Super League team Kavala.
Club career
Giannou played youth football in Australia for the junior divisions of South Melbourne. He went on to represent his State, Victoria, at the ages of 14 and 15 and eventually earned a position in the Victorian Institue of Sport's Football Academy.
He played for Melbourne Victory in pre-season matches prior to the 2006/07 A-League season with a view to be taken on in an apprenticeship capacity. However he was invited on a 2 week trial with PSV Eindhoven with the Academy and Reserve team, but was alerted that if thing's did not work out in Holland he would have a place in Melbourne's first team.[1][2]
Ultimately the stint at PSV proved unsuccesful and he returned to Australia and signed for six months with Victorian Premier League side Oakleigh Cannons.
On August 29, 2007 he was signed his first professional contract with then Greek Super League side, Apollon Kalamarias, on a two-year deal.[3]
On July 24 2009, Giannou signed a five-year contract for Greek Super League side, AO Kavala, along side fellow Australians, Robert Stambolziev and Zeljko Kalac.[4][5]
International career
While at the Victorian Institute of Sport he represented Australia at Under 17 level in the Under 17 World Cup qualification process, scoring once in their last game against Indonesia.[6]
During his time with Apollon Kalamarias he represented Greece at Under 19 level in the European Youth Championships.
