- 5 November 2008: US state of California passes Proposition 8, overturning a recent state Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples who had married or planned to marry, the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the county of Santa Clara joined together the following day in a series of three lawsuits against the proposition.
- 10 October 2008: US state of Connecticut's Supreme Court rules that same-sex marriage must be recognized in the state. [1]
- 5 September 2008: Australia introduces on federal level same sex reforms to parliament. [2]
- 15 July 2008: The Massachusetts Senate voted Tuesday to repeal a 1913 law used to bar out-of-state gay couples from marrying in the state, a law that critics say was originally aimed at interracial marriages.
- 11 June 2008: A bill to allow Same-sex marriage in Norway passes parliament. [4]
